The topic of IP Law can be quite a confusing subject. There are so many rabbit warrens that we can be led down in the space of IP (or Intellectual Property) legalities, so I set out in this podcast to dispel some of the myths and to bring some relatable clarity to some of the common areas.

Those areas being; patents, trademarks and copyright.

My guest on the podcast is IP Law expert, Anthony Verna from Vrna Law. Anthony did a great job of breaking down different areas of IP Law and making them apply to a trade/construction business.

IP protection is a big deal and there are things that we can do, to make sure that our businesses and our assets are safe and protected. During this podcast, I learned the following:

• Patents are there to protect ideas and inventions
• Trademarks protect brands as an asset
• Copyright protects logos, slogans, colours and even shapes.

It was a really interesting conversation. One that I’m sure you’ll learn a lot from and one that I hope will one day protect you from getting into trouble.

I’m not new to meditation. Over the years, I’ve been exposed to mediation in different environments and in different scenarios. If I’m honest, I have always struggled with it. I have never felt ‘good at it’ and in every instance so far, I have given up, which pisses me off even more. 

Regardless, I appreciate how important meditation is and over the years, I feel that I have refined my method of meditation to suit my personality. You see, meditation can be different for everyone and different methods will best suit different people.

The purpose of this series was to gain some insight into the rapidly changing world of solar energy from multiple perspectives and viewpoints. 

In part one, we had a brilliant discussion with Andrew O'Farrell, who works in the energy sector as an energy trader. It was a powerful episode because effectively, the companies that Andrew works with are in control of sourcing the power that makes in possible for you to read this article. 

I loved his perspective because as someone that is surrounded in a market that is dominated by fossil fuel, there is some surprising insight to where that might end up in the future.

In the second podcast, I speak with Alex from ShineHub about the fantastic initiatives that they work on that sees entire communities working together to harvest, use and store solar energy. 

This conversation was about communities becoming more self-sufficient and working together to reduce their costs and reduce their carbon footprint. I absolutely loved it. 

In this podcast, which is the third and final episode of 'The Future Of Energy' series, I am speaking with Joe Edginton from Energy Culture about the changes that he sees on a residential scale when it comes to solar power. 

We talk about solar panels, battery storage units, costs, rebates, licensing, qualifications and lots more. 

This conversation really brings the series full-circle, making it relatable to anyone that is in a position which might see them becoming an installer themselves, or having a system

Crazy, right? I know, I was pretty shocked to hear that these sorts of places exist, but sure enough, both here in Australia and right around the world, communities are harvesting, storing and using solar energy as their primary power source.

Imagine the global problems that could be resolved if power was available via solar? Rural communities in third-world countries could access clean water, via powered pumps. Education could be made available via computers that now are able to run off solar power. In general, the planet would be a much better place.

The future of virtual reality in construction

You’d have to have been living under a rock for the last ten years to not notice the rise of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). It seems to be everywhere we look. To the point where now, we can turn our mobile devices into a VR unit and go explore what feels like another dimension.

Years ago, I was at a tradeshow in Munich, Germany, where I was drawn to an exhibition that was showcasing a VR as a tool for the trades. At the time I’d only really seen VR in the movies and I’d never heard of AR (I’ll explain the difference shortly).

I don’t know if it was the technology that captivated me, or staring at the people in a zombie-like trance while they were using it. Either way, it looked cool. Ever since I saw that, I have pondered where the VR/AR world may end up.

The guy I was speaking with at the exhibit was telling me about how they can create environments off a drawing so it can be experienced prior to it actually being developed. It sounded a little far-fetched to be honest, but it was there in front of my eyes. I was more curious as to who’d use it. And back then, who’d pay for it, as it cost a bomb!

What’s the difference between Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)?

Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds.

If you’ve ever tried VR, you basically step into another world, the minute you place your mask on. Everything you see is a computer-rendered reality and yes, it’s kind of trippy. 

Augmented Reality is an enhanced version of reality created by the use of technology to overlay digital information on an image of something being viewed through a device (such as a smartphone camera).

A classic example of AR that most of us would be familiar with is a fad that captured the world a few years ago, called Pokemon Go. It’s where you take an actual existing environment and overlay it with a digital render to make it look like it’s there. 

VR Applications

VR is a very effective tool for casting vision. If they say a picture tells a thousand words, then I’d have to say that a VR experience tells a thousand pictures. 

• Imagine being able to view a home before it’s built
• What if you could sit in a car that didn’t exist?
• What if you could go ‘in-store’ shopping from the comfort of your home?

Some of these things might sound creepy, but most of them exist already and we’re only scratching the iceberg.

AR is extremely useful for things like:
