In this episode, we welcome Megan Tady, author of the Washington Post noteworthy book "Bluebird Day," which follows a compelling mother-daughter alpine skiing duo in the Swiss Alps. From her journalism roots to becoming a novelist, Megan shares how she crafted an authentic story about competitive skiing despite not being an expert skier herself. Through extensive research, including interviews with Olympic athletes and sports psychologists, she brings depth and authenticity to her characters' experiences on and off the slopes.

Megan tells about her personal journey with skiing, from humble beginnings at Nebraski to a transformative (and terrifying) experience on a Swiss glacier that later informed her writing. She discusses how this personal encounter with skiing anxiety helped shape her character development and contributed to the book's exploration of mental health in sports.

As a mother of two young children just beginning their skiing journey at Berkshire East, Megan offers insights into balancing family life with creative pursuits and the delicate art of encouraging children in sports while respecting their boundaries. She thoughtfully weaves in broader themes about climate change's impact on winter sports, nature's healing power, and the importance of disconnecting from technology to connect with the outdoors.

Keep Up with Megan!

In this summer episode, personal trainer and ski mom Hollie Nicholson shares her expertise on building strength for skiing through accessible at-home workouts. From her Indiana roots to skiing the Swiss Alps, Hollie discusses how she helps women build confidence and strength for their mountain adventures. As the creator of Strong Training Methods, she breaks down how busy moms can incorporate effective 30-45 minute workouts using simple equipment like dumbbells and resistance bands.

Hollie shares valuable insights on teaching young children to ski, starting with her own kids at age two. She discusses practical approaches to managing ski gear for growing families, including tips for buying and trading equipment through platforms like Poshmark and local ski swaps.

We dive into fitness fundamentals and learn why unilateral training is crucial for skiing and how proper core engagement can help prevent injuries. She emphasizes that strength training doesn't require heavy barbells or gym memberships - just consistent, purposeful movement with proper form. Her program offers flexibility for active women who enjoy multiple sports.

The conversation includes Hollie's adventures skiing the Swiss and Italian Alps, practical packing tips for international ski trips, and navigating European ski culture with family. And like always, we discuss après ski traditions, including non-alcoholic options and her family's unique pop-tart tradition. For women hesitant to start strength training, Hollie offers encouraging wisdom about the connection between muscle maintenance and long-term health.

Notable Quotes:

"Muscle is your metabolic engine. It's like your body's physical 401k - we wouldn't step into retirement without money in the bank, so we shouldn't step into retirement without muscle on our body."

"The longer you wait, you're delaying the results and not just like in the mirror. You're delaying feeling better, being okay with your body, being more confident and just being able to move well."

In this episode, the Ski Moms welcome Sam Ryan, Director of Partnerships at Roam Fest, who shares her evolution from mental health professional to mountain bike advocate. Sam discusses how Roam Fest has grown from a small gathering to an 800+ person celebration of women and non-binary riders, complete with workshops, guided rides, and legendary dance parties.

Sam offers valuable insights for newcomers to mountain biking, emphasizing the importance of finding supportive women's riding groups and welcoming bike shops. We explore how Roam Fest creates an inclusive environment through affinity groups, ranging from parent riders to geologists to sober riders, ensuring everyone finds their community.

The discussion delves into the transformation of the mountain biking industry, highlighting the increasing presence of women-owned brands and female representatives. Particularly relevant for ski moms is the parallel between learning to ski and starting mountain biking, with recommendations for coaching organizations like VNTRbirds and All Ride.

For those interested in attending Roam Fest, Sam details the logistics of the three-day festival, including camping arrangements, demo bikes, guided rides, and workshops.
