Today we’re going deeper into the topic of the role(s) you took on in childhood—and how these roles were created out of shame and guilt.

A role is basically an agreement between you and your parents for you to be a certain way, and to never change that. If you don’t do the internal work to change your role, you’ll be stuck being that person for the rest of your life.

When we’re first born, we have no self-image. We can’t consciously reflect on who we are. We don’t even know who we are yet. All we can do is take in everything that’s going on around us. Whatever we’re exposed to on a regular basis (as far as emotions go) becomes part of how we see the world.

From a young age, most of us were shamed into changing our behavior and suppressing who we naturally are. We internalized a core image of ourself based on shame and guilt. It’s like a computer hard drive—the programming causes us to grow up and be “robots” for the world instead of being our authentic, individual selves.
