  • Can Grief & Growth Exist Together? With Special Guest, Melanie Cool

Grief can touch every part of us, our thoughts, emotions, relationships and even how we experience ourselves in our bodies. Yet growth does not require us to deny our grief, rush through it or pretend everything is okay.

Together, Heidi and Melanie explore how grief and growth can coexist and how, even during painful chapters of life, we can gradually rediscover meaning, connection, hope and possibility.

    In this episode, you’ll explore:

    • Why grief doesn’t follow a neat or predictable timeline
    • Whether grief and personal growth can exist at the same time
    • The difference between moving forward and “moving on”
    • How difficult experiences can change the way we see ourselves and our lives
    • The role of connection, community and support during grief
    • What post-traumatic growth really means
    • How we can honour what has been lost while still allowing ourselves to experience joy
    • Practical ways to support yourself through periods of loss and change
    • Why growth after adversity doesn’t mean the experience needed to happen—or that we have to be grateful for it

This conversation is a beautiful reminder that healing is not about erasing the past. We can honour our grief while also creating space for something new to emerge.

Grief and growth are not opposites.

We can miss what was, honour what mattered, and still allow ourselves to become who we are becoming.

  • The Compound Effect: Small Practices, Powerful Change
Week 5 — The Compound Effect: Small Practices, Powerful Change

What if changing how you feel in your body doesn’t require one enormous breakthrough?

What if meaningful change begins with something much smaller?

    A moment of awareness.
    A gentler movement.
    A pause before reacting.
A little more curiosity and a little less judgement.

Welcome to the final episode of Somatic in September.

Over the past few weeks, Heidi Hadley has taken us on a journey through the Australian landscape to explore the remarkable relationship between your brain, body and nervous system.

We’ve stood beneath the ancient trees of the rainforest and explored resilience.

We’ve travelled beneath the surface of the Great Barrier Reef to discover the importance of interconnection.

We’ve encountered the crocodile and considered the protective wisdom of the nervous system.

And we’ve stepped away from the noise to rediscover stillness, connection and presence.

Now, in our final episode, we bring everything together with one powerful idea:

Small practices, repeated consistently, can create powerful change.

🌱 The Power of Small Shifts

When we want something to change, it’s easy to assume we need to do more.

More effort. More stretching. More exercise. More discipline.

But lasting change isn't always created through one dramatic action.

    Sometimes it begins quietly.

Perhaps you notice tension a little earlier than you did before.

Maybe you become curious about a sensation rather than immediately judging it.

Perhaps you notice your breathing, soften unnecessary effort or spend a few quiet moments connecting with the world around you.

Individually, these moments can seem insignificant.

But repeated over time, they begin to accumulate.

Like roots deepening quietly beneath the earth, small practices can create the foundations for powerful change.

🎧 In This Episode, You’ll Explore:

    • Why meaningful change doesn’t always require dramatic action
    • How small practices can accumulate over time
    • Why consistency can be more powerful than intensity
    • The role of awareness and curiosity in Somatic Movement
    • How your brain, body and nervous system continually work together
    • Why noticing small changes matters
    • How reducing self-judgement can change your relationship with your body
    • The importance of bringing somatic awareness into everyday life
    • How the lessons from Somatic in September connect
    • How to continue developing your somatic practice beyond this series

🌿 Your Final Somatic in September Reflection

Take a few moments to think back over the past month.

    Ask yourself:

    What has surprised me?

What have I noticed about my body that I wasn't noticing before?

Have there been moments when I’ve responded with curiosity rather than judgement?

    Have I noticed tension sooner?

Have I experienced moments of greater ease, connection or presence?

Don’t dismiss the small changes because they don’t feel dramatic enough.

    Notice them.

    Those moments matter.

Because awareness itself is part of the practice.

And rather than searching for one enormous breakthrough, consider what might happen if you continued giving your brain and nervous system small opportunities to experience something different.

Small practice. Repeated consistently. Powerful change.

🌱 Continue Your Total Somatics Journey

    Keep noticing.

    Keep moving with awareness.

    Keep asking questions.

    And above all, keep listening.

Because your body has been speaking to you all along.

And the more gently you listen, the more beautifully it responds.

  • The Power of Pausing, Presence & Embodiment

Somatic in September  Week 4 | Total Somatics®

What if one of the most powerful things you could do for yourself today was simply… pause?

In Week 4 of Total Somatics’ Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley explores the power of pausing, presence and embodiment — and why slowing down long enough to notice what is happening within your body can be such an important part of somatic awareness.

Modern life constantly pulls our attention outward. Notifications, responsibilities, deadlines and endless mental chatter can leave us feeling disconnected from our physical experience.

In this episode, Heidi invites you to turn your attention inward and become curious about what your body is communicating.

Rather than continually pushing, fixing or overriding sensations, what might happen if you paused and listened?

    In this episode, you’ll explore:

    • The power of the pause and why pausing doesn't mean doing nothing.
    • What embodiment means and how it can help you reconnect with your physical experience.
    • How to bring your attention out of the constant mental chatter and back into your body.
    • The importance of noticing sensations with curiosity rather than judgement.
    • How everyday stress and urgency can influence the way you hold and move your body.
    • Simple opportunities to notice muscular tension, breathing and habitual patterns throughout your day.
    • How greater body awareness and mindful movement can support your overall wellbeing.
    • Why you don't always need to push harder — sometimes you need to pause long enough to listen.

  • Before Your Body Shouts: Learn to Hear the Whispers
Week 3 — Before Your Body Shouts: Learn to Hear the Whispers

What if your body isn’t fighting against you? What if it’s trying to protect you?

Tight shoulders. A clenched jaw. Holding your breath. A body that seems unable to relax.

We can easily become frustrated with these sensations and wonder, “Why won’t my body just let go?”

But what happens when we ask a different question?

“What might my body be trying to protect?”

In Week 3 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley introduces us to one of Australia’s most ancient and misunderstood animals — the crocodile — to explore the remarkable protective intelligence of the human nervous system.

Crocodiles have survived for millions of years because their systems are exceptionally good at one thing: survival.

Your nervous system also has protection at its core.

Moment by moment, it receives sensory information and responds to what is happening within and around you. When your system perceives a need for protection, that response can sometimes be experienced as muscular tension, bracing, restricted breathing or a feeling of being unable to completely let go.

Rather than immediately treating those responses as something that needs to be fought or forced away, Somatic Movement invites us to become curious about them.

Because your body may not be the enemy.

It may be doing the best it can with the information it currently has.

And when we begin providing new sensory information and movement possibilities, we can start developing a very different relationship with our body.

🐊 In This Episode, You’ll Explore:

    • Why your nervous system is constantly working to protect you
    • Why muscular tension and bracing may be protective responses
    • What the crocodile can teach us about survival and adaptation
    • Why your body can sometimes find it difficult to “let go”
    • The connection between stress, breathing and muscular tension
    • Why forcing a tense body to relax may not always be the answer
    • How Somatic Movement can provide new sensory information
    • The importance of noticing your body’s quieter signals
    • How curiosity can change the way you experience tension and discomfort
    • Why working with your body can feel very different from fighting against it

🌿 Your Somatic in September Practice

This week, notice one moment when your body becomes tense.

    Perhaps your shoulders rise.

    Your jaw tightens.

    Your breathing changes.

    Your stomach contracts.

    Your hands grip.

Or you notice yourself bracing somewhere in your body.

Instead of immediately trying to make the tension disappear, pause for a moment.

    Notice it.

    And gently ask yourself:

“What might my body be protecting right now?”

You don’t need to find the perfect answer.

The practice is simply about replacing frustration with curiosity.

Notice what happens when, rather than demanding that your body change, you become interested in what it may be communicating.

    🎧 Your Guided Somatic Practice

You'll find a guided Somatic Movement practice accompanying this episode to support your exploration throughout the week.

Approach the movements gently and with curiosity.

    Remember:

You’re not trying to override your body. You’re offering it new options.

Your nervous system has spent your entire life gathering information, adapting and trying to protect you.

Learning to recognise its quieter signals may help you notice what your body is communicating before it has to shout for your attention.

Next week, we complete our Somatic in September journey by stepping away from the noise and rediscovering something many of us have quietly lost:

    Connection. Stillness. Presence.

    Until then, remember:

Your body has spent every moment of your life trying to protect you.

The moment we stop seeing the body as the enemy and begin approaching it as a partner, our relationship with ourselves can start to change.

Stay curious. Stay compassionate with your body.

  • Your Body is Listening to Everything - Are You?
Week 2 — Your Body Is Listening to Everything — Are You?

What if the tension in your neck isn’t just about your neck?

What if your breathing, nervous system, fascia, muscles, thoughts and emotions are all part of a much bigger conversation happening throughout your body?

In Week 2 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley takes us beneath the surface of Australia’s spectacular Great Barrier Reef to explore a powerful idea:

Your body is not a collection of separate parts. It is an interconnected system.

Just as a coral reef thrives through thousands of living relationships, your body relies on constant communication and adaptation.

Your fascia, muscles, nervous system, breathing and sensory experiences don’t operate independently. They continually influence one another.

And when we stop focusing solely on individual “problem areas” and begin paying attention to the relationships between the parts, something can shift.

Perhaps wellbeing isn’t about achieving perfection.

    Perhaps it’s about improving connection.

🌊 In This Episode, You’ll Explore:

    • Why your body is more interconnected than you may realise
    • What the Great Barrier Reef can teach us about the human body
    • The relationship between fascia, muscles and your nervous system
    • Why focusing only on the area of discomfort can miss the bigger picture
    • How breathing and sensory awareness influence your whole system
    • Why diversity and adaptability can create resilience
    • How thoughts and physical sensations continually influence our experience
    • Why wellbeing doesn’t require every part of you to be “perfect”
    • How simple observation can help develop greater body awareness
    • The importance of curiosity when exploring patterns of tension and movement

🌿 Your Somatic in September Practice

Take five minutes this week to observe something in nature.

    Watch the waves.

Notice clouds moving across the sky.

Observe birds flying, trees moving in the breeze or water flowing.

Rather than concentrating on one individual element, notice how everything works together.

Then bring that same curiosity to your body.

    Notice your breathing.

    Notice your shoulders.

    Notice your jaw.

    Notice your eyes.

Notice where you’re holding effort — and where you feel ease.

There’s nothing you need to force or fix.

    Simply observe.

Sometimes becoming aware of the relationships within our body can give our nervous system new information and new possibilities.

    🎧 Your Guided Somatic Practice

To accompany this episode, Heidi is sharing a 33-minute gentle movement practice designed to explore and release patterns of tension around the:

    • Neck
    • Shoulders
    • Ribs
    • Back

    https://TotalSomatics.com/gift

Think of this practice not as forcing your body to change, but as offering your nervous system new sensory information and a different conversation.

Next week, we meet one of Australia’s most misunderstood animals — the crocodile — and explore why the protective patterns we develop aren’t necessarily mistakes.

They may be intelligent strategies your nervous system learned for survival.

    For now, remember:

“The reef doesn’t thrive because of one single coral. It thrives because of relationships.”

Your body may be much the same.

Healing and wellbeing aren't only about one part.

They're about the relationship between all the parts and the relationship you have with yourself.

  • Resilience: How Your Body Learns to Adapt

Week 1 — Resilience: How Your Body Learns to Adapt

What if resilience isn’t about staying strong, pushing through or never struggling?

What if resilience is something your body is already learning — every single day?

In Week 1 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley takes you into the ancient Daintree Rainforest to explore what nature can teach us about resilience, adaptation and the remarkable capacity of the human body to change.

Ancient trees don’t survive because they avoid storms. They survive because they adapt.

Your body does something remarkably similar.

Throughout life, your nervous system continually responds to experience, while your fascia and neuromuscular system adapt to the demands placed upon them. Rather than seeing ourselves as permanently “stuck”, understanding this adaptability can offer a very different perspective:

    Change is possible.

    In this episode, Heidi explores:

Why resilience doesn’t mean being calm all the time
What ancient trees can teach us about adapting to change
How your nervous system continually responds and learns from experience
    How fascia remodels throughout life
Why patterns in the body don’t necessarily have to be permanent
The difference between resilience and simply “pushing through”
How curiosity can help us develop greater body awareness
Why small, consistent experiences can create meaningful change over time

🌳 Your Somatic in September Practice

    This week, find a tree.

It might be in your garden, your local park, along your morning walk, or even outside your office window.

Take a moment to really notice it.

    Then ask yourself:

What has helped this tree to grow?

Consider its roots. The weather it has endured. The seasons it has experienced. The conditions that have shaped it.

Then gently turn the question towards yourself:

What has helped me to grow?

No judgement. No need to fix anything.

    Just curiosity.

Because perhaps resilience isn’t about avoiding the storms of life.

Perhaps it’s about developing deeper roots, greater adaptability and the capacity to find our way back towards balance.

    🎧 Free Regulation Practice

Complement this episode with Heidi’s short guided eye movement and breathing practice:

    https://TotalSomatics.com/Regulate

Next week, we journey from the rainforest to the Great Barrier Reef and explore how connection, interdependence and adaptability can create strength.

“The strongest trees aren’t the ones that avoid the storm. They’re the ones that learn through it. Maybe we’re the same.”

  • Why Your Body Won't Let Go

Have you ever stretched the same tight muscle again and again, only to find that the tension keeps coming back?

Perhaps the question isn't simply, “How do I get this muscle to let go?”

Perhaps there's a much bigger conversation happening.

In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley continues our exploration of fascia by looking beyond individual muscles and tissues to something far more fascinating: the interconnected communication taking place throughout your entire body.

Your body isn't a collection of separate parts.

Your brain, nervous system, muscles, fascia, sensory systems and movement patterns are continually communicating and adapting. Much of this happens automatically, without you consciously thinking about it.

Think of your body like an orchestra.

If you listened only to the violin, you'd miss the richness of the cello, piano, percussion and every other instrument contributing to the music.

Your body is much the same.

When an area continually feels tight, restricted or reluctant to “let go,” focusing solely on that muscle or the fascia may mean we're listening to just one instrument — while missing the rest of the orchestra.

    In This Episode, You'll Explore:

    • Why your body should be viewed as an interconnected system rather than separate parts
    • How your brain, nervous system, muscles and fascia communicate
    • Why persistent tightness may involve more than the area where you actually feel the tension
    • Why repeatedly stretching a tight muscle doesn't always create lasting change
    • How the nervous system influences patterns of muscle tension and movement
    • The role of sensory information in how your brain organises movement
    • How neuroplasticity gives the nervous system opportunities to learn and adapt
    • Why protective patterns aren't necessarily something we need to fight against
    • How curiosity about your whole system can change the way you approach your body

A Different Question to Ask Your Body

    Rather than always asking:

“How do I make this tight area release?”

    Try becoming curious about:

“Why might my system be maintaining this pattern?”

    And perhaps even more importantly:

“What new information could I give my brain and nervous system to help create another possibility?”

This subtle shift takes us away from battling with the body and towards understanding the extraordinary communication happening within it.

    Somatic in September Is Coming

This episode also creates the bridge into Somatic in September, where we'll begin exploring the body from a much broader perspective.

We'll look beyond fascia alone and explore the fascinating relationship between fascia, the nervous system, protective reflexes, sensory awareness, movement and neuroplasticity — and how these systems work together to influence how you move, feel and respond to life.

Because sometimes the most interesting question isn't:

“Why won't my body let go?”

    It's:

“What is my body trying to tell me?”

  • Everyone’s Talking About Fascia — But What Are We Missing?

Fascia seems to be everywhere at the moment. Social media is talking about it, movement professionals are exploring it, and more people are becoming curious about the role this remarkable connective tissue plays in how we move and feel.

But what exactly is fascia — and are we in danger of looking at it in isolation?

In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley introduces you to the fascinating world of fascia and, importantly, places it within the bigger picture of your body.

Fascia isn't simply something to stretch, release or work on. It exists as part of an extraordinarily interconnected system involving your brain, nervous system, muscles, movement patterns and sensory experiences.

So rather than simply asking, “How can I release this tight area?”, perhaps there are more interesting questions we can begin asking:

Why is my nervous system maintaining this pattern?

What sensory information is my brain receiving?

And how can I help my brain and body discover new possibilities through neuroplasticity and somatic movement?

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • What fascia is and why it has suddenly become such a popular topic
    • Why fascia shouldn't be viewed as a separate system within the body
    • The relationship between fascia, muscles, the brain and nervous system
    • Why stress can influence muscle tone and how we experience tension
    • Why repeatedly targeting a “tight” area may not always address the bigger picture
    • How sensory awareness and neuroplasticity fit into the Total Somatics approach
    • Why understanding the body as an interconnected system can change the way we approach movement, tension and resilience

This episode also begins our journey towards Somatic in September, when we'll explore these connections more deeply and discover practical ways to support greater awareness, adaptability and ease within the body.

Rather than chasing the latest fascia trend, let's become curious about something much bigger:

What if fascia is only one part of an incredible conversation taking place throughout your body every moment of every day?

  • Did Your Childhood Teach You to Survive Instead of Connect? - The Total Somatics Show

Have you ever wondered why you overthink, stay busy, struggle to switch off, or feel emotionally exhausted—even when life seems to be going well?

What if these aren't personality traits at all?

What if they're learned survival patterns?

In this episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley explores how our early life experiences shape the way our nervous system responds to the world around us. Through a Total Somatics lens, you'll discover how emotionally unpredictable environments can teach us to survive rather than truly connect—with ourselves, our bodies and those around us.

This isn't about blaming parents or caregivers. Most people do the very best they can with what they know. Instead, this episode is about developing awareness, understanding your body's protective responses, and recognising that the patterns you learned can also be changed.

    In this episode you'll discover:

    •  Why many of our stress responses begin long before adulthood.
    •  How emotionally dysregulated environments influence the developing nervous system.
    •  The difference between surviving and truly feeling safe.
    •  Why you may find yourself constantly busy, people-pleasing or always "pushing through."
    •  How stress can show up as muscle tension, posture changes, shallow breathing and persistent fatigue.
    •  Why your body often reacts before your mind has time to think.
    •  How chronic survival patterns can influence anxiety, relationships, confidence, work and everyday life.
    •  Why awareness is the first step towards lasting change.

You'll also learn why many of the habits we judge ourselves for were once intelligent survival strategies—and why your body deserves compassion, not criticism.

    Questions to reflect on

As you listen, take a moment to ask yourself:

    •  What does my body do first when I feel stressed?
    •  Do my shoulders rise?
    •  Does my jaw tighten?
    •  Do I hold my breath?
    •  Do I keep pushing through?
    •  Or do I quietly pull away?
    •  Am I living in my head more than I'm living in my body?

These small moments of awareness are often where meaningful change begins.

    Through a Total Somatics lens

One of the key messages in this episode is that your nervous system isn't broken.

    It adapted.

Many of the patterns that now leave you feeling anxious, disconnected or exhausted were once your body's way of helping you navigate uncertainty.

The wonderful news is that the brain and body remain adaptable throughout life. Through neuroplasticity and greater body awareness, it's possible to update old patterns and create new ways of responding that feel calmer, more connected and more resilient.

  • Are You Living or Just Surviving? - The Total Somatics Show

Welcome to the very first episode of The Total Somatics Show.

Have you ever wondered why certain people, situations or even news headlines can affect you so deeply?

Why do some people seem calm on the outside, yet feel constantly on edge within?

And what if the way you respond today isn't really about today at all?

In this opening episode, Heidi explores one of the most important concepts in Total Somatics: the difference between living and surviving.

Through a Total Somatics lens, you'll discover how your nervous system, posture, breathing, muscle tension and everyday behaviours may all be reflecting learned survival patterns that began years—even decades—ago.

This isn't about blame. It's about understanding.

When we understand our patterns, we can begin to change them.

    In this episode, you'll discover:

    • Why many people live from survival mode without realising it.
    • How emotionally unpredictable environments can shape the nervous system.
    • The connection between stress, muscle tension, posture and breathing.
    • Why you may spend more time in your head than connected to your body.
    • How high-functioning anxiety, people-pleasing, overworking or withdrawing can all be different expressions of the same underlying survival response.
    • Why awareness is the first step towards meaningful and lasting change.
    • How neuroplasticity gives us hope that learned patterns can be updated.

Heidi also shares personal reflections about resilience, life experiences and the lessons that have shaped both her clinical practice and her outlook on life.

Throughout this podcast, you'll hear practical insights drawn from more than 25 years of clinical experience, combined with conversations around emotional intelligence, relationships, business, resilience, mindset and the human experience—all explored through a Total Somatics perspective.

    A question to reflect on

What does your body do first when you feel stressed?

    Do your shoulders rise?

    Does your jaw tighten?

    Do you hold your breath?

Do you keep pushing through... or quietly pull away?

Sometimes our body tells us the truth long before our mind catches up.

    Join the conversation

The Total Somatics Show is something we're building together.

    I'd love to hear:

    • Your questions
    • Your life lessons

You can also send a voice message via Facebook Messenger by searching for Heidi Hadley, or send a written message that may be featured in a future Ask Heidi segment.
