In a five hour address to the nine man, three women panel, he broke down the evidence into five parts, confession, DNA, eye witnesses, lies and inferences. As part of this, he read a transcript of Jenna Stack’s evidence recounting how she saw Puska crouched over Ashling in a ditch by the Grand Canal. He also read parts of Jozef Puska’s testimony when he said he too had been attacked and he was trying to save Ashling.

They also recap a harrowing week for the Murphy family which included hearing post mortem evidence that Ashling’s voice box was cut during an attack which saw her receive 11 stab wounds which ultimately caused her death.
The jury also heard evidence this week from garda Tom Dunne who took the 999 call at Tullamore Garda station and was the first first policeman at the scene - he and his colleague performed CPR on Ashling for at least ten minutes but to no avail.

The jury was also told there was just a 1 in 14,000 chance that DNA found under the fingernails of Ashling didn’t belong to Puska and that extensive CCTV evidence taken on the day of the murder saw him trailing two other women on his bicycle.
