  • Hormones 101: What You Need to Know

How can you tell if your hormones are balanced or not? We have talked so much about hormones in the past, what more do you need to know? To have an even better understanding of hormonal health, let’s dive into adrenal and thyroid health and learn more about the roles that the liver and the gut play when it comes to our hormones.

You can find all the info and links about this episode at https://holisticwellness.ca/episode34

    Topics Discussed in this Episode:

    • What it means to have healthy, balanced hormones
    • How to achieve balanced hormones
    • The important functions of the adrenals, the liver, the digestive system, the thyroid and the gut that are related to hormonal health
    • The danger of having excess cortisol
    • Managing your adrenals through food
    • Foods that support liver detoxification
    • What happens when we can’t properly digest our food and how to improve digestion
    • Foods that support thyroid health and gut health

    Key Takeaways:

    • Having stable blood sugar means being able to last between 4 to 6 hours between your meals without snacking and actually feel balanced and stable, without headaches, without feeling anxious, and without irritability.
    • The liver is really important when it comes to hormonal health because it converts your T4 thyroid hormone to the active T3 that you need.
    • When you have hypothyroidism, you will often find that your digestion slows down as well.
    • Your intestines aid in the elimination of toxins and play a very protective role against many health conditions as well as help regulate your hormones.
    • Different bacteria in your gut help you produce hormones as well as certain vitamins and minerals.
    • If you have high-functioning adrenals, it means you have a low-functioning thyroid.

    Action Steps:

    • Manage your stress. Take some time to relax, unwind and do self-care.
    • Take the necessary steps to support your microbiome.
    • Improve your digestive health by loading up on prebiotics.
    • Eat the healthiest, cleanest diet that you can.
    • Make sure to get good quality sleep.
    • Make a list where you may be neglecting your sleep, where in your life you may need to better manage your stress, what’s happening in your life in terms of your bedtime routine and your wake up, what’s going on with your food intake and whether or not you’re staying hydrated. See where you can make some improvements.

    Samantha said:

“Our hormones, we often think of estrogen and progesterone and testosterone but we have many hormones that regulate the functions in our bodies and that interact with each other, which can make it quite complex sometimes to really understand.”

“Those three things, food, stress management, and sleep, will have such a positive impact on all of these areas -- on your intestinal system, on your thyroid, on your adrenals, on your ovaries, on your liver.”

  • The 30-Day Thyroid Reset

The thyroid tends to be at the root of so many health issues for so many women. What triggers these thyroid disorders and how can we fix these underlying problems? Today we continue the thyroid conversation with functional medicine practitioner Dr. Becky Campbell as she talks about her book, The 30-Day Thyroid Reset Plan, and how we can use it to heal our body for life.

Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

    Topics Discussed in this Episode:

    • The seven different triggers that make us sick and how they’re related to our thyroid
    • What tests to take to check your gut health
    • What can cause HPA axis imbalances
    • The DUTCH test and other lab tests that you should ask for from your doctor
    • How vitamin deficiencies can impact your thyroid, Hashimoto’s, and your hormones overall
    • Heavy metal testing and detoxifying
    • The optimal diet for supporting thyroid health and Hashimoto’s

    Key Takeaways:

    • Gaining weight out of nowhere without having changed your diet or your exercise is a really big sign that there is something is wrong with your health.
    • The thing with thyroid issues is you have to really look and see all the different things that could be triggering it and to address all of them.
    • 90% to 97% of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s, which is actually an immune system issue, and most of the immune system is located in the gut.
    • A lot of thyroid patients have nutrient deficiencies and these can be tied to gut infections, especially SIBO (small intestine bacteria overgrowth).
    • You don’t have to have one symptom in your gut to have a gut infection.
    • The Paleo diet works very well in supporting thyroid health.
    • The liver is one of the most nutrient-dense food there is.

    Action Steps:

    • Look at your gut health. Check for yeast overgrowth, bacteria imbalances, low stomach acid, SIBO, leaky gut, etc.
    • With any vitamin or mineral that you need, try to get it with food first before you resort to any vitamin or mineral supplement.
    • If you have a mercury filling that you want to be removed, make sure that they are safely removed by a bio dentist.
    • Use safer beauty products and household cleaning products.
    • Use essential oils instead of perfumes.

    Dr. Becky Campbell said:

“I don’t know one person who doesn’t have some form of stress. I mean, even if it’s not emotional stress, it could be physical stress. So that really plays a role in what our thyroid is doing. The thyroid and the adrenal glands run really hand in hand.”

“So many people really don’t realize the deep impact that the chemicals in our beauty products have on our hormone levels… Not only are they hurting themselves but they’re actually hurting everyone around them, too.”

    Thanks for listening!

  • Reversing Hair Loss + Strategies for Healthy Hair

Have you ever experienced hair loss? For women who are suffering from this symptom, it’s really disheartening when you have all these gorgeous, lush hair falling out. Is there any way that you can reverse that? Find out all you need to know about hair loss plus some tips and strategies that you can do to have healthy hair.

Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

    |

    Topics Discussed in this Episode:

    • The reasons why you might be experiencing hair loss
    • Why you need to get a full thyroid panel
    • Supplemental thyroid hormones and finding out what works for you
    • Optimizing your diet for healthy hair
    • Hair product ingredients to be careful of
    • Essential oils for healthy hair and scalp
    • How to combat dandruff
    • DIY natural shampoos and conditioners

    Key Takeaways:

    • Hair loss is often a symptom of thyroid issues and hormonal imbalances.
    • It’s important to have someone look at your lab results and be able to explain them to you because you can have thyroid dysfunction and symptoms including hair loss even if your TSH and your T4 are normal.
    • When it comes to our hair, it’s not just about the products that we use, but it really is about what we are doing internally to support our hair.
    • Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.
    • The scalp has over 200 blood vessels and 650 sweat glands. In fact, the scalp is really one of the most absorbent parts of the body. So when you think of it this way, it’s even more important to be conscious of what you’re putting on your scalp because you’re absorbing all of that.
    • It’s 100% possible to get your hair back. But it’s a process that takes time. Oftentimes, it takes a good six to eight months before you can start seeing results, so it’s something you really do have to commit to.

    Action Steps:

    • If you are experiencing a lot of hair loss, look into your lab work, specifically with your thyroid. Make sure to get a full thyroid panel.
    • Make sure you’re on the right type and the right dose of supplemental thyroid hormone.
    • Optimize your diet to support thyroid health and have healthy hair.
    • Check your hair products for unsafe ingredients. Commit to ditching the conventional shampoos and use more organic options for natural hair care.
    • Give the No Poo Method a try.
    • If you are suffering from a dry, itchy and flaky scalp, try using some rosemary essential oil or pine essential oil. Just add a few drops to your head and gently massage the oils into your scalp. Peppermint is also a really great option.
    • If you have weak and damaged ends and split ends, you can use jojoba oil or argan oil. Just rub a few drops onto your palm and then gently run it through your hair, focusing on the ends.
    • You can also add a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to a spray bottle with some warm water and just spritz it on your hair after you’ve shampooed. The vinegar will help restore the pH in your hair and add some shine.
    • Use coconut oil to combat dandruff. Massage a few tablespoons onto your scalp, leave it on your scalp for a few hours, and then rinse off. Repeat this two to three times throughout the week depending on the severity of your dandruff.

    Samantha said:

“Really, you can get your hair to be healthy and strong and shiny, but it just does take a little bit of work… it’s really important to look at our diet and our hormonal health and thyroid and to really dive into all these areas to see where some of the root causes might be.”

“[Be] conscious of the quality and the type of products that you are using and [make] a conscious effort to switch over to more natural, organic and botanical type of brands.”

    Thanks for listening!

    • Coffee alternatives that you need to know about
    • Our four-week Healing & Dealing with Hashi’s program
    • Mari’s typical daily diet

    Key Takeaways:

    • When transitioning from one form of diet to another, it’s really important that you listen to your body and tune in to your brain about what foods to add and what foods to take out.
    • Most thyroid conditions are actually Hashimoto’s, which means there are a lot of efforts in place to help people along. And there are a lot of modalities that you can build into your day to help with that.
    • Adaptogens play a big part in the healing of Hashimoto’s. They also help with stress and boost the immune system.

    Action Steps:

    • Work with a team of practitioners who can help you look at Hashimoto’s from a functional medicine perspective and help direct you towards a solution.
    • If you do get diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, make sure to get support from friends and family, and your community.
    • Go on a grain-free diet and test the waters of the AIP or the autoimmune protocol for at least a month.
    • Build self-care practices like detoxifying your body and your home, going to bed on time and hydrating and flushing your system constantly with lots of water and teas, and bringing in some adaptogens into your diet.

    Marni Wasserman:

“Once you find out that you are diagnosed [with Hashimoto’s], I think knowing that there is a lot of information out there should be really encouraging. There’s a lot of books, there’s a lot of podcasts, there’s a lot of resources and experts.”

“What we’re so committed to is to bring people through a journey of healing that they can start learning and taking control of their own health… and it’s about simplifying things and just finding the right things to take into consideration.”

  • The Epstein-Barr Virus Solution

Has the Epstein-Barr virus ever been on your radar? The EBV is a very smart virus that basically hijacks our cells and hides in our immune system, and it’s about time that we know all about it. Get clarity around the steps to take to healing EBV or even just finding out if you have it with Doctor of Clinical Nutrition Kasia Kines.

    Topics Discussed in this Episode:

    • What is chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)? How is it different from severe chronic active EBV?
    • What is the appropriate testing for EBV?
    • How does the mechanism of EBV reactivation happen?
    • What are the different types of triggers for EBV?
    • How relevant is nutrition to EBV?

    Key Takeaways:

    • One of the things that can trigger EBV reactivation in your infected B-cells is if you happen to have another infection.
    • The EBV thrives on toxicity and feeds on excess hormones produced by your body when you’re having hormonal imbalance caused by other health issues, stress, exposure to toxins, etc. It’s very pertinent to women who are breastfeeding or postpartum or going through perimenopausal changes.
    • You need to have a plant for every 100 square feet that you live in to filter the air inside your house. The concentration of toxins inside your house is eight times more than outside.
    • The food that you eat is important because the food is the foundation. If you start improving your food and decreasing your toxicity level, things will start shifting.
    • Selenium stops the replication process of EBV so it is recommended to take selenium supplements.
    • You can’t fight EBV when you lack sleep or when your blood sugar is unstable.

    Action Steps:

    • Test for EBV by going to direct to consumer labs.
    • If you are going through the airport, you can decrease your toxic load, especially on your thyroid, by avoiding the X-ray machine. Instead, you can request for a pat-down.
    • Improve your air quality at home by having green plants indoors.
    • If you have heated floors at home, opt for natural rugs that you can wash naturally instead of wall-to-wall carpeting.
    • You need to be strategic in targeting EBV because you don’t want to spend a whole year trying to figure it out, you want to start healing.
    • Invest in organic food, and avoid microwaving your food. Also, make sure that you don’t go hypoglycemic and that you don’t skip meals.

    Dr. Kasia Kines said:

“Once you have a virus, it stays with you for life, so some antibodies will always be elevated if you’ve had it… Pretty much, it’s impossible to not have that virus.”

“Skipping meals is not optional. Having meals that is just one group of food and is not balanced, is not optional. Just like having low nutrient status, having hypoglycemia, ups and downs with the glucose, that is wonderful for the virus but not for us.”

    • Why PCOS often goes undiagnosed
    • The top-down vs the bottom-up approach to PCOS
    • How to get a Hashimoto’s diagnosis if you have it

    • PCOS is a syndrome, which means there are multiple different contributing factors to its symptoms. Having PCOS doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to have fertility problems or failed multiple miscarriages, but it can often lead to that if the underlying metabolic dysregulation is not properly dealt with. And you don’t have to have cysts to have PCOS.
    • Your hormonal health is part of your overall health and it’s a reflection of how well you take care of yourself on a daily basis.
    • Diabetes has been known to be called the ‘silent killer’. That is because severe symptoms of blood sugar are often ‘asymptomatic’.
    • The healthier your body is when you go into IVF, the better the results will be.
    • In Chinese medicine, if your organs and your chi or the freeways of your energy are imbalanced, then your hormones will be imbalanced.
    • If you have very large, dense breasts, even if you are doing regular self-breast exams, it can be very difficult to pick up tumors.

    Action Steps:

    • If you have thyroid issues, switch to a gluten-free low inflammatory diet to help recover your thyroid health. Make sure that you have certain nutrients in your diet or take supplements to really support thyroid health.
    • If you’re looking to get an IVF, work with someone for three months prior to get your body in better shape and have a more positive response to IVF.
    • If you’re going to do chemo and radiation, make sure that it’s the right chemo for you, that your healthy cells are being protected, and that the side effects are lessened.
    • If you have a family history of breast cancer, find an oncologist or a breast specialist who really understands that and who can put you into a diagnostic mammogram category with maybe a breast MRI every eight months or once a year.
    • Once you get a diagnosis, it’s always best to go and get a second opinion. Don’t just take the first thing that is said to you but do a little bit of research.
    • For breast cancer care/prevention/recovery, avoid saturated fats, fried food, fast food, sugary drinks, standard meat, sugary over-the-counter boxed cereals, and alcohol.

    Carol said:

“Unfortunately, in our society, we’re not taught about how to stay balanced as we’re little… This should be something that’s part of standard education -- how to have a balanced life and how to stay in touch with our inner being and how to take care of ourselves.”

“It takes a lot of support to get through a health crisis, whether it’s PCOS, infertility, failed IVFs, multiple IVFs or breast cancer... Find a woman or a doctor who really will support your highest self and not diminish or dismiss your concerns. And don’t give up."

  • Reflecting and Insights on Success, Abundance, Health and Life

Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the things that you need to get done? Sometimes we are so focused on trying to get to the top of the mountain but we forget the importance of the steps that it takes to actually get there. In this episode, I share some of my reflections and insights that will hopefully help to guide you to more power and possibility.

Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

    Topics Discussed in this Episode:

    • The importance of acknowledging yourself
    • Overwhelm a.k.a My Way of Controlling the Future
    • Taking control of your health by making the right choices
    • Showing up from a place of integrity and cleaning up your life with the out-of-integrity list
    • Experiencing joy and happiness
    • Standing for the possibility of who people can be
    • Why you shouldn’t sacrifice your wellbeing
    • Why it’s never about the money
    • Coming from a place of love vs coming from a place of fear
    • Functioning in Have, Do, Be vs functioning in Be, Do, Have
    • How more work could often lead to less living

    Key Takeaways:

    • We often think that things aren’t moving fast enough or that we’re not doing more. But it’s not about the “doing”, it’s about the “being”. You can’t be your optimal self if all you do is the former and not the latter.
    • Overwhelm is an inability to be present that we create from a place of fear. It’s something that allows you to play small, to hide out in fear, and it ultimately makes you really ineffective.
    • Recognizing overwhelm allows you to more easily pull yourself out of it and move forward.
    • Doing things with integrity is like cleaning up the good, the bad, and the ugly, not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well.
    • Whatever it is in your life, if you’re not getting results, check your integrity.
    • Joy and happiness is not something that you wait for. You create it, you cultivate it, and it is a choice to experience it.
    • Many people are more committed to their current circumstance than their future. They don’t value themselves so they don’t invest in themselves.
    • Committing to yourself means that you have a deep sense of self-worth.
    • We either come from a place of love or a place of fear. Fear is tied up in our excuses about time, money, and relationships. It’s also tied up with frustration, overwhelm, lack, worry, and doubt. Love is solid. It’s grounded, and it’s rooted, and it’s full of faith in yourself, in the future, and in the universe.

    Action Steps:

    • Take some time to journal and come up with new insights into your life, your family, your relationships, and your business. Consider the following questions:
    • What are you more committed to?
    • Where are you sacrificing yourself currently in your life?
    • Where in your life are you pushing to get a result, versus letting it flow?
    • Are you functioning from Have, Do, Be vs. Be, Do, Have?
    • What does your future self look like? What do they do? How are they being?

    Samantha said:

“Does everybody get to this point of having more confidence and being more courageous? No, not necessarily. But it takes time, it takes commitment, it takes openness and lots of willingness, and a whole lot of self-love.”

“Start to live in your truth now so that you can empower those around you to live in their power. Because that’s what it’s really about. When we start to step more powerfully into who we are, then we can give that ability to others to do the same.”

  • The Keto Diet, Fasting & Finding Your Own Keto

What is the keto diet, and what does it mean to find your own keto? Learn all about keto from author and keto enthusiast Leanne Vogel as she talks about her own keto journey. Have a look into the keto lifestyle and learn how you can do keto right.

Visit https://holisticwellness.ca/podcast for the complete show notes of every podcast episode.

    Topics Discussed in this Episode:

    • What happens when you do the ketogenic diet wrong
    • The woman-friendly approach to the keto diet
    • How we can use our period as a biomarker for health
    • Why you should do carb-ups and how to do it
    • Going dairy-free on keto
    • How to do keto if you have an issue with saturated fats
    • Keto and thyroid health
    • Tips on fasting
    • Navigating the RV lifestyle on keto

    Key Takeaways:

    • There’s this thing in the ketogenic space that everyone is terrified of called gluconeogenesis, that could lead some people to go about the ketogenic diet the wrong way.
    • There’s still a lot of misinformation about what works and what doesn’t work in the ketogenic diet.
    • The ketogenic diet is such a therapeutic diet and it heals our bodies in such a way that the body that we had a year from starting keto was a completely different body from the body we have today.
    • Holding fear around change actually holds us back from actually accomplishing more with our eating styles.
    • By giving ourselves permission to eat carbs when we feel it’s best for our body, it puts the onus on our body to tell us when it’s time to have carbs.
    • Fasting is a tool that you can use at your disposal.

    Action Steps:

    • Make sure that you’re doing the ketogenic diet right and figure out what works for you.
    • Take note of your blood color during your period and find out what it could mean for your health.
    • Switch to using a menstruation cup instead of the usual menstrual pads.
    • Use carb-ups to your benefit.
    • Use fasting as a tool according to what works best for you.

    Leanne said:

Being in a constant state of ketosis maybe isn’t that great, just like riding your bike 24/7 isn’t great… Dipping in and out of ketosis with the ebb and flow of foods available and activities going on, that just makes more of a lifestyle change that you can live long-term.”

“It’s important for anyone, regardless if you’re a blogger or a nutritionist or an expert in whatever, to show vulnerability in whatever you do because that’s how you live from your truth and you continue to learn more about yourself and about the world around you.”

    • If you live in the US, federal regulations allow a certain level of heavy metals in the pigments of makeup products.

“Menstruation and the hormonal cycle is not a curse, it’s a blessing. It’s a blessing to have these beautiful, hormonal shifts every month that you can ride… even PMS can have a gift to it, especially if you approach it with the right mentality.”
