Two movies titled Trespass enter, only one will leave (with its title) as Herman Davis, David Vitrano, and Robert Rau watch Ice-T and Ice Cube battle a goofy Bill Paxton — and then a somewhat reserved Nic Cage — to determine which film should be called Trespass.
There’s plenty to like about the 90’s Trespass, probably because it’s directed by the always adequate Walter Hill. He’s made 48 Hours, Brewster’s Millions, The Warriors, and tons of other good movies. This also good movie is supposed to be a modern retelling of The Treasure of Sierra Madre, where Ice-T and Ice Cube are giving Real World-style confessionals.
But the word “good” cannot explain whatever Nicholas Cage, Nicole Kidman, and a bunch of dummy criminals were doing. Made five years ago for $35 million and grossing around $25,000, Joel Schumacher’s Trespass is an utter mess, but it does have the advantage of being about a group of people trespassing on someone’s property. Will that be enough to keep the title, or can a quality movie prevail? Listen if you dare.
