  • Fast Talk, ep. 36: Inside the new science of climbing
Is climbing as simple as power-to-weight ratios? Not so much. In the January/February issue of VeloNews magazine, we dug into the rarely explored science of climbing. This podcast goes behind the scenes of the making of that article, and the many fascinating discoveries that came out of it.
Co-hosts Trevor Connor and Chris Case turned themselves into mad scientists and convinced WorldTour pro Sepp Kuss (LottoNL-Jumbo) to join them for several time trials up a few Boulder climbs in the quest for answers.
Chief among the questions was simply: does climbing come down to power-to-weight or does your climbing technique make a difference? In other words, if two riders weigh the same and average the same wattage, will they have the same time up a climb regardless of how they ride? Answering that question led to several others, including how a rider's "type" affects his or her climbing and what's the difference between pros and amateurs.
We also discovered some surprising answers about how different riders climb, how cadence plays a role, and if those basic online calculators can really predict your time up a climb. We also collected novel on-the-road biomechanical data.
This special episode of Fast Talk takes a deeper dive into our in-house experiment, more so than any magazine article could. No, our experiment wasn't worthy of publication in the journal Science, but we had a lot of fun, we discovered some things that we're very excited about, and, most importantly, we hope to help all of you become better climbers.
Joining us for the podcast is Ryan Kohler of the University of Colorado Sports Medicine and Performance Center, who helped with the experiments on the road.

  • Can anyone stop Richie Porte at the Tour Down Under?

Hear from Sagan, Impey, Porte, and Haas as GC battle hots up ahead of Willunga

It’s the end of another tough day at the Tour Down Under and world champion Peter Sagan has taken the stage into Uraidla with a sprint win over Daryl Impey and Luis Leon Sanchez. The Bora-Hansgrohe rider now leads the race from Impey at two seconds and teammate Jay McCarthy at nine seconds.

After a stage that saw temperatures nudge over 42 degrees, we hear from the winner Sagan, along with Impey, Richie Porte, and Nathan Haas. Porte attacked several times in the finale and, despite being unable to make a move stick, the BMC Racing rider is well placed heading into stage 5 to Willunga Hill as he looks to secure back-to-back titles.

As for Haas, the Katusha-Alpecin rider suffered terribly in the heat, conceding close to a minute and, with it, any chance of making the podium in this year’s race.

We hear from the riders in the thick of the action, dissect the GC standings, and look ahead to what might happen on the climb of Willunga. Can anyone stop Porte?

  • Hot hot heat at the Tour Down Under

Hear from Sunweb on how to handle 47 degrees, Viviani on his first Quick-Step win, and Matt White on stage 4

The third stage of the 2018 Santos Tour Down Under was one of the hottest in the race's history, ending with a conclusive sprint victory for Elia Viviani over race leader Caleb Ewan. In the latest episode of the Cyclingnews Podcast – brought to you in association with Prendas Ciclismo and Pinarello – we hear from Viviani, Mitchelton-Scott sports director Matt White, and Sunweb's sports director Luke Roberts.

The win was Viviani's first for his new team Quick-Step Floors as the Belgium squad nailed their leadout and took advantage of Ewan hesitating in the final 200 metres into Victor Harbor. Ewan has the consolation of remaining in the leader's ochre jersey while Viviani jumps into second place overall at 10 seconds. Mitchelton-Scott's Daryl Impey, a dark horse for stage 4, is third at 14 seconds to Ewan.

In the podcast, we hear from Viviani about his victory and how a recon of the finale paid off. We also hear White's preview of the new stage 4 finish into Uraidla and his take on how the stage will play out. Finally, we hear from Roberts, who provides his insight into how to keep riders cool and functioning when the temperature closes in on 50 degrees.

It's the end of stage 2 of the Tour Down Under and in the latest episode of the Cyclingnews Podcast – brought to you in association with Prendas Ciclismo and Pinarello – we hear from Andre Greipel, Caleb Ewan, Richie Porte, Adam Hansen and Steve Morabito.

For a quick recap: Greipel won stage 1 of the race and pulled on the first leader's jersey, but today, on the road to Stirling, Ewan surprised everyone and won the stage and took the overall lead in the process. After two days of racing, Ewan leads the race by 10 seconds, with a host of GC candidates hot on his heels.

We hear from Greipel about his win, and what was a difficult and emotional 2017, as well as from his long serving teammate, Adam Hansen, who has ridden with the German since 2007.
