Continuing on with the theme of parent support, this episode is part one of a two-part review of my recent conference presentation for the International Council on Development and Learning (ICDL). Retired special educator and DIR® Expert Training Leader, Jackie Bartell, has joined me to discuss my revelations from being a Floortime parent for 8 years now. We will cover the first five revelations this time and continue with the next five next time. Jackie has worked with and supported many families over the years, so I was eager for her thoughts about my revelations.

Clinical psychologist, author, and parent, Dr. Robert Naseef joins the podcast this episode from Philadelphia for our second podcast together. In our last podcast episode on ambiguous loss a year ago we discussed how we can unpack the why’s and what ifs that parents feel when learning their child is neurodivergent, how to see the strengths in our child, and be the energetic parent our child needs us to be. Dr. Naseef runs an online support group for fathers that is ongoing through the pandemic, and he has continued to see clients virtually.

I’m thrilled to welcome Chris Hernandez this episode for the first time after meeting him in March at the NYC DIR® Conference! He is an Ed Tech, coach, instructional designer, and a digital creator. He is also the Media Specialist at the Rebecca School in Manhattan, a Developmental, Individual differences, Relationship-based (DIR®) model school and he holds a DIR® Certificate from the International Council on Development and Learning (ICDL), the home of DIRFloortime®. Everyone kept telling me I had to meet Chris who does the Rebecca Listener podcast. The more I learned about what Chris does, the more I realized I had to share it all with the DIR® world!

Bridget Palmer is a DIRFloortime® Expert Training Leader in the Developmental, Individual differences, Relationship-based (DIR®) model and a speech-language pathologist in Buffalo, NY. She runs a Floortime parent support group called Floortime Families which was in person but is now online during the pandemic.

This week Eunice Lee joins us. She is a DIRFloortime® Expert Training Leader and a social worker in Toronto, Canada. She’s been learning about DIR® since 2006. Eunice was one of my family’s very first DIR® coaches eight years ago after I saw her featured in the MEHRIT study at York University about DIRFloortime®. We did a podcast episode two years ago called Self Regulation Starts With Us where we discussed how we, as caregivers, have to understand our own regulation before we can support our children’s.

This topic comes up when people haven’t heard of DIRFloortime®. They ask, “What about research? Can we justify this approach with research?” ⁠Dr. Diane Cullinane joins us this episode to review some of the research supporting DIRFloortime. She is a developmental pediatrician and an Expert DIRFloortime® practitioner in South Pasadena, one of the founders of the⁠ DIR® Coalition of California⁠ which advocates for DIRFloortime® and the author of Behavioural Challenges in Children with Autism and other Special needs: The Developmental Approach⁠. Dr. Cullinane wrote a white paper summarizing the research to date in 2017 which is on the research page of the International Council on Development and Learning.
