    1

But a man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.

It is silly not to hope, he thought.

Now is no time to think of what you do not have. Think of what you can do with what there is.

Keep your head clear and know how to suffer like a man.

    2

But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert. Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated.

    3

As the sun rose he saw other boats in toward shore, which was only a low green line on the sea.

    4

Most people are heartless about turtles because a turtle’s heart will beat for hours after he has been cut up and butchered. But the old man thought, I have such a heart too and my feet and hands are like theirs.

    5

It was considered a virtue not to talk unnecessarily at sea and the old man had always considered it so and respected it. But now he said his thoughts aloud many times since there was no one that they could annoy.

    6

What I will do if he decides to go down, I don’t know. What I’ll do if he sounds and dies I don’t know. But I'll do something. There are plenty of things I can do.

    7

The position actually was only somewhat less intolerable; but he thought of it as almost comfortable.

    8

Then he thought, think of it always. Think of what you are doing. You must do nothing stupid. Then he said aloud, “I wish I had the boy. To help me and to see this.”

    9

If I were him I would put in everything now and go until something broke. But, thank God, they are not as intelligent as we who kill them; although they are more noble and more able.

    10

I wonder why he jumped, the old man thought. He jumped almost as though to show me how big he was. I know now, anyway, he thought. I wish I could show him what sort of man I am. But then he would see the cramped hand. Let him think I am more man than I am and I will be so. I wish I was the fish, he thought, with everything he has against only my will and my intelligence.

“I know. It's all wrong. By rights, we shouldn't even be here. But we are here. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The one's that really mattered, full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end… Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was...When so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing...this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out there clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you… that meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going... because they were holding on to something. That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for.

  • The Rose |

    The Rose

Amanda McBroom

Some say love it is a river

    That drowns the tender reed

Some say love it is a razor

That leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love it is a hunger

    An endless aching need

I say love it is a flower

    And you its only seed

It ’s the heart afraid of breaking

    That never learns to dance

It ’s the dream afraid of waking

    That never takes the chance

It ’s the one who won’t be taken

    Who cannot seem to give

And the soul afraid of dying

    That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely

And the road has been too long

And you think that love is only

For the lucky and the strong

    Just remember in the winter

    Far beneath the bitter snow

Lies the seed that with the sun’s love

In the spring becomes the rose

We are love itself and we are glowing with love.

    The Beginning of the name

Khaled Mattawa

    My days are her name

and the dream, when the sky spends its night inside my sadness, is her name.

    Premonition is her name

and the feast, when the slaughterer and the slaughtered are one, is her name.

    Once I sang: every rose

    in fatigue is her name

    in travel, her name.

Has the road come to an end? Has she changed her name?

    《最初的姓名》

    作者:阿多尼斯 汉译:薛庆国

    我的日子是她的名字,

    还有梦想——当夜晚在我的忧伤里不眠——

    也是她的名字;

    愁绪是她的名字,

    还有喜宴——当屠夫与被屠者混淆的时候——

    也是她的名字。

    有一次我唱道:在困倦时,

    在旅途中,每一朵玫瑰

    都是她的名字。

    道路是否已终结?

    她的名字是否已改变?

    阿多尼斯说:写作,是为了让唯一能浇灌内心的泉水继续流淌。我不懂阿拉伯语,无法最直观地欣赏阿多尼斯的语言之美,却惊奇地发现英文和汉语翻译的版本也颇具语言之美和思想魅力。诗人将自己与世界的距离具象到几行诗句里,难怪有人说,诗歌是世界人民唯一的“母语”。读诗的意义就是将散落天涯各处的诗人和我们拉地如此之近,安顿我们。有人说阿多尼斯是阿拉伯世界的异教徒,西方世界的陌生人,我想如果一定要说他属于谁,那么他是每一个人的诗人,因为我们分明能在他的诗歌里再次经历与世界的距离,与自我的贴近。

How can I call what is between us a past?

Khaled Mattawa

“What is between us is not a story

not a human apple or jinn’s

not a sign of a season

    or a place

not anything that could be historicized”

This is what the vicissitudes inside us say

How can I say then that our love

has been taken by the wrinkled hands of time

再看看英译版中的时态变化会发现,诗人从标题的踌躇(what is between us),走向结尾对情感结束的确认(our love has been taken)。

The barn was very large. It was very old. It smelled of hay and it smelled of manure. It smelled of the perspiration of tired horses and the wonderful sweet breath of patient cows.

It often had a sort of peaceful smell -- as though nothing bad could happen ever again in the world. It smelled of grain and of harness dressing and of axle grease and of rubber boots and of new rope.

And whenever the cat was given a fish-head to eat, the barn would smell of fish. But mostly it smelled of hay, for there was always hay in the great loft up overhead. And there was always hay being pitched down to the cows and the horses and the sheep.

The barn was pleasantly warm in winter when the animals spent most of their time indoors, and it was pleasantly cool in summer when the big doors stood wide open to the breeze.

    "Salutations!" said the voice.

Wilbur jumped to his feet. "Salu-what?" he cried.

    "Salutations!" said the voice.

"What are they, and where are you?" screamed Wilbur. "Please, please, tell me where you are. And what are salutations?"

"Salutations are greetings," said the voice. "When I say 'salutations,' it's just my fancy way of saying hello or good morning. Actually, it's a silly expression, and I am surprised that I used it at all. As for my whereabouts, that's easy. Look up here in the corner of the doorway! Here I am. Look, I'm waving!"

Last, Wilbur saw the creature that had spoken to him in such a kindly way. Stretched across the upper part of the doorway was a big spider web, and hanging from the top of the web, head down, was a gray large spider. She was about the size of a gumdrop. She had eight legs, and she was waving one of them at Wilbur in friendly greeting. "See me now?" she asked.

"Oh, yes indeed," said Wilbur. "Yes indeed! How are you? Good morning! Salutations! Very pleased to meet you. What is your name, please? May I have your name?"

"My name," said the spider," is Charlotte."

    "Charlotte what?" asked Wilbur, eagerly.

"Charlotte A. Cavatica. But just call me Charlotte."

"I think you're beautiful," said Wilbur.

Wilbur was now the center of attraction on the farm. Good food and regular hours were showing results: Wilbur was a pig any man would be proud of. One day more than a hundred people came to stand at his yard and admire him.

Charlotte had written the word RADIANT, and Wilbur really looked radiant as he stood in the golden sunlight. Ever since the spider had befriended him, he had done his best to live up to his reputation.

When Charlotte's web said SOME PIG, Wilbur had tried hard to look like some pig. When Charlotte's web said TERRIFIC, Wilbur had tried to look terrific. And now that the web said RADIANT, he did everything possible to make himself glow.

It is not easy to look radiant, but Wilbur threw himself into it with a will. He would turn his head slightly and blink his long eyelashes. Then he would breathe deeply. And when his audience grew bored, he would spring into the air and do a back flip with a half twist.

At this the crowd would yell and cheer. "How's that for a pig?" Mr. Zuckerman would ask, well pleased with himself. "That pig is radiant."

Can it really be sixty-two years ago that I first saw you?

It is truly a lifetime, I know. But as I gaze into your eyes now, it seems like only yesterday that I first saw you, in that small café in Hanover Square.

From the moment I saw you smile, as you opened the door for that young mother and her new born baby. I knew. I knew that I wanted to share the rest of my life with you.

I still think of how foolish I must have looked, as I gazed at you, that first time. I remember watching you intently, as you took off your hat and loosely shook your short dark hair with your fingers.

I felt myself becoming immersed in your every detail, as you placed your hat on the table and cupped your hands around the hot cup of tea, gently blowing the steam away with your pouted lips.

From that moment, everything seemed to make perfect sense to me. The people in the café and the busy street outside all disappeared into a hazy blur. All I could see was you.

All through my life I have relived that very first day. Many, many times I have sat and thought about that the first day, and how for a few fleeting moments I am there, feeling again what is like to know true love for the very first time.

It pleases me that I can still have those feelings now after all those years, and I know I will always have them to comfort me.

Not even as I shook and trembled uncontrollably in the trenches, did I forget your face. I would sit huddled into the wet mud, terrified, as the hails of bullets and mortars crashed down around me. I would clutch my rifle tightly to my heart, and think again of that very first day we met.

I would cry out in fear, as the noise of war beat down around me. But, as I thought of you and saw you smiling back at me, everything around me would be become silent, and I would be with you again for a few precious moments, far from the death and destruction. It would not be until I opened my eyes once again, that I would see and hear the carnage of the war around me.

I cannot tell you how strong my love for you was back then, when I returned to you on leave in the September, feeling battered, bruised and fragile. We held each other so tight I thought we would burst. I asked you to marry me the very same day and I whooped with joy when you looked deep into my eyes and said "yes" to being my bride.

I’m looking at our wedding photo now, the one on our dressing table, next to your jewelry box. I think of how young and innocent we were back then. I remember being on the church steps grinning like a Cheshire cat, when you said how dashing and handsome I looked in my uniform.

The photo is old and faded now, but when I look at it, I only see the bright vibrant colors of our youth. I can still remember every detail of the pretty wedding dress your mother made for you, with its fine delicate lace and pretty pearls. If I concentrate hard enough, I can smell the sweetness of your wedding bouquet as you held it so proudly for everyone to see.

I remember being so over enjoyed, when a year later, you gently held my hand to your waist and whispered in my ear that we were going to be a family.

I know both our children love you dearly; they are outside the door now, waiting.

Do you remember how I panicked like a mad man when Jonathon was born? I can still picture you laughing and smiling at me now, as I clumsily held him for the very first time in my arms. I watched as your laughter faded into tears, as I stared at him and cried my own tears of joy.

Sarah and Tom arrived this morning with little Tessie. Can you remember how we both hugged each other tightly when we saw our tiny granddaughter for the first time? I can’t believe she will be eight next month.

I am trying not to cry, my love, as I tell you how beautiful she looks today in her pretty dress and red shiny shoes, she reminds me so much of you that first day we met. She has her hair cut short now, just like yours was all those years ago.

When I met her at the door her smile wrapped around me like a warm glove, just like yours used to do, my darling.

I know you are tired, my dear, and I must let you go. But I love you so much it hurts to do so.

As we grew old together, I would tease you that you had not changed since we first met. But it is true, my darling. I do not see the wrinkles and grey hair that other people see.

When I look at you now, I only see your sweet tender lips and youthful sparkling eyes as we sat and had out first picnic next to that small stream, and chased each other around that big old oak tree.

I remember wishing those first few days together would last forever. Do you remember how exciting and wonderful those days were?

I must go now, my darling. Our children are waiting outside. They want to say goodbye to you.

I wipe the tears away from my eyes and bend my frail old legs down to the floor, so that I can kneel beside you. I lean close to you and take hold of your hand and kiss your tender lips for the very last time.

    Sleep peacefully my dear.

I am sad that you had to leave me, but please don’t worry. I am content, knowing I will be with you soon. I am too old and too empty now to live much longer without you.

I know it won’t be long before we meet again in that small café in Hanover Square.

    Goodbye, my darling wife.

And so Emma Morley walked home in the evening light, trailing her disappointment behind her. The day was cooling off now, and she shivered as she felt something in the air, an unexpected shudder of anxiety that ran the length of her spine, and was so intense as to make her stop walking for a moment. Fear of the future, she thought.

She found herself at the imposing junction of George Street and Hanover Street as all around her people hurried home from work or out to meet friends or lovers, all with a sense of purpose and direction. And here she was, twenty-two and clueless and sloping back to a dingy flat, defeated once again.

‘What are you going to do with your life?’ In one way or another it seemed that people had been asking her this forever; teachers, her parents, friends at three in the morning, but the question had never seemed this pressing and still she was no nearer an answer. The future rose up ahead of her, a succession of empty days, each more daunting and unknowable than the one before her. How would she ever fill them all?

She began walking again, south towards The Mound.

‘Live each day as if it’s your last’, that was the conventional advice, but really, who had the energy for that? What if it rained or you felt a bit glandy? It just wasn’t practical. Better by far to simply try and be good and courageous and bold and to make a difference. Not change the world exactly, but the bit around you. Go out there with your passion and your electric typewriter and work hard at something. Change lives through art maybe. Cherish your friends, stay true to your principles, live passionately and fully and well. Experience new things. Love and be loved, if you ever get the chance.

That was her general theory, even if she hadn’t made a very good start of it. With little more than a shrug she had said goodbye to someone she really liked, the first boy she had ever really cared for, and now she would have to accept the fact that she would probably never see him again. She had no phone number, no address, and even if she did, what was the point? He hadn’t asked for her number either, and she was too proud to be just another moony girl leaving unwanted messages. Have a nice life had been her last line. Was that really the best she could come up with?

She walked on. The castle was just coming into view when she heard the footsteps, the soles of smart shoes slapping hard onto the pavement behind, and even before she heard her name and turned she was smiling, because she knew that it would be him.

‘I thought I’d lost you!’ he said, slowing to a walk, red-faced and breathless, attempting to regain some nonchalance.

    ‘No, I’m here.’

    When you are old
            --- William Butler Yeats
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
    Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,
    And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

William Butler Yeats- When you are old《当你老了》;When you are old是叶芝为他终生所爱之人Maud Gonne 茅德冈所作。

    But You Didn't

Remember the day I borrowed your brand new car and dented it?
I thought you'd kill me, but you didn't.

And remember the time I dragged you to the beach, and you said it would rain, and it did?
I thought you'd say, "I told you so." But you didn't.

Do you remember the time I flirted with all the guys to make you jealous, and you were?
    I thought you'd leave, but you didn't.

Do you remember the time I spilled strawberry pie all over your car rug?
I thought you'd hit me, but you didn't.

And remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance was formal and you showed up in jeans?
I thought you'd drop me, but you didn't.

Yes, there were lots of things you didn't do.
But you put up with me, and loved me, and protected me.

There were lots of things I wanted to make up to you when you returned from Vietnam.

    But you didn't.

Indeed, love sometimes makes you laugh, and sometimes makes you cry. Love sometimes breaks your heart but it will finally make you grow. Betrayal and separation may let you know you deserve a better one. However, the most extraordinary love always grows in daily life.

The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux is a Gothic mystery novel first published in 1910. The novel follows a phantom who haunts the Paris Opera and the mysterious incidents attributed to this figure.

    《歌剧魅影》(The Phantom of The Opera)是一部哥特式神秘小说,小说自1910年连续出版。

The story begins with an auction, in which a music box brings the old Raoul back to the past:

Carlotta is an opera singer in the bustling metropolis of Paris, France. One day, a mysterious phantom suddenly appears in the theater. The phantom threatens Carlotta to give up her role of singing in the opera Faust and give the role to a woman named Christine.

The phantom's real body is a masked man who has been lurking in the theater. An accident ruined his appearance and made him terrifying and ferocious. Thus, he has no choice but to wear a mask and hide in the cemetery.

One day, Christine's song attracted his attention, and he found that he had deeply fallen in love with this beautiful woman, so he decided to appear and kidnap Christine. At first, Christine was afraid of the phantom. However, as time went on, Christine gradually found that this terrible phantom had a gentle and kind side. The phantom begins to teach her to sing, and threatened Carlotta through terror to let the theater give the leading role to Christine.

But, when the phantom finds out that Christine and Raoul are in love, he is angry and tries to stop them. After a performance, he drags Christine into his hidden lair while Raoul chases him. The phantom then captures Raoul and threatens Christine that she can either live with the Phantom or let Raoul live or be free but let Raoul die. Christine bravely faces the terrible choice put forward by the phantom. She tells the phantom that he is not alone, and the phantom, overcome with emotion, lets them go. As Raoul and Christine leave, the Phantom sings softly to the music box in despair, and the music box begins to rotate magically... Upon hearing the sound of people coming for him, he flees, leaving only his white mask behind.

Due to the twists and turns of the plot, it is full of strange and terrifying colors, the phantom of the opera has attracted a large number of readers, and has derived some films and drama works adapted from the original. The novel has been adapted into several formats.

The phantom of the opera was premiered in 1986 and won seven Tony Awards in 1988. It is one of the most successful musicals in history. In 2004, director Joel Schumacher won three Oscars and three Golden Globe nominations for the adaptation of this musical.

China's early film "Midnight Song" is also based on this novel.

Think of Me (Phantom of the Opera)

Nina Zhan

    Think of me,

    think of me fondly,

    when we've said goodbye.

Remember me, once in a while -

    please promise me you'll try.

When you find ,that once again,

you long to take your heart back and be free -

if you ever find a moment,

    spare a thought for me...

We've never said our love was evergreen,

or as unchanging as the sea

but if you can still remember,

    stop and think of me...

Think of all the things we've shared and seen

don't think about the things which might have been...

    Think of me,

    think of me waking,

    silent and resigned.

    Imagine me,

trying too hard to put you from my mind.

    Recall those days,

look back on all those times,

think of the things we'll never do

there will never be a day, when I won't think of you...

Flowers fade, the fruits of summer fade

They have their seasons, so do we

    But please promise me,That sometimes

    you will think Me!
