There dwell the Sea King and his subjects.’


“在海的远处，水是那么蓝，像最美丽的矢车菊花瓣，同时又是那么清，像最明亮的玻璃。然而它是很深很深，深得任何锚链都达不到底。要想从海底一直达到水面，必须有许多许多教堂尖塔一个接着一个地联起来才成。海底的人就住在这下面。”


听众朋友你们好，欢迎收听为你读英语美文，好久不见，我是你们的老朋友-潇雨。有多少人和我一样熟悉这优美得如同诗歌一般的开头，这是丹麦著名作家安徒生为我们创造的海底童话世界。


这个童话有很多缩减版或者改编版，最简单残忍的莫过于小人鱼选择了灭亡，变成了海面上的一簇泡沫。因此，有人说《海的女儿》是一个悲伤的童话，孩子们听了，总是遗憾人鱼的爱没有圆满的结局，或者为失去生命的小人鱼感到痛惜。曾经我也如此。后来，随着年纪的增长，我很多次重读《海的女儿》，越来越感觉到，这不是一个爱而不得牺牲自我的故事。


小人鱼最爱听的故事便是人类世界的事。地面上的花儿能散发出香气，森林里的草地是绿色的，树枝间有没见过的鸟儿唱歌，还有来来往往的船只和热闹的城市。她在海底默默等待自己15岁的生日，因为到了15岁时，祖母就允许她浮到海面上去看一看。浮上海面的那一天，她遇到了王子的船，接下来的事你们都知道了。小人鱼开始向往人类的世界，她知道，人类只有死亡才能到达海底宫殿，不禁对人类的生命产生了好奇，于是她问自己的祖母：


“If human beings are not drowned, can they live forever? do they never die as we do here in the sea ?”


"如果人类不淹死的话，"小人鱼问，“他们会永远活下去么？他们会不会像我们住在海里的人们一样地死去呢？”


“Yes.” replied the old lady,“ they must also die, and their term of life is even shorter than ours. We sometimes live to three hundred years, but when we cease to exist here we only become the foam on the surface of the water, and we have not even a grave down here of those we love. We have not immortal souls, we shall never live again; but, like the green seaweed, when once it has been cut off, we can never flourish more. Human beings, on the contrary, have a soul which lives forever, lives after the body has been turned to dust. It rises up through the clear, pure air beyond the glittering stars. As we rise out of the water, and behold all the land of the earth, so do they rise to unknown and glorious regions which we shall never see.”

Walnuts

各种核桃

This is the time for our best walnuts, the smallest or pignuts, say the last of October. Got some and a half shelled. I did not wish to slight any of Nature's gifts. I am partial to the peculiar and wholesome sweetness of a nut, and I think that some time is profitably spent every autumn in gathering even such as our pignuts. Some of them are a very sizeable, rich- looking, and palatable fruit. 

十月底了——可以摘到最好的核桃，也就是最小的那种光滑山核桃。捡得一些，有其中一半都是圆果。我不想怠慢任何来自大自然的馈赠。我偏爱核桃那种清甜、香醇的味道。甚至认为即使把年年秋天都用来捡最小的光滑山核桃也很划算。有些核桃个儿大，堂皇华贵，味道又好。

How can we expect to understand Nature unless we accept like children these her smallest gifts, valuing them more as her gifts than for their intrinsic value. I love to get my basket full, however small and comparatively worthless the nut. It takes very severe frosts, and sun and wind thereafter, to kill and open the shells so that the nuts will drop out. 

大自然给予的每一份礼物，哪怕再小也应怀着赤子之心欣然接受·并且能更多看到礼物背后的意涵而非物质的价值，进而真正明白大自然的心意。就算小核桃没大颗的好，我也愿意装满篮子带回家。要经过多次严酷的霜冻，曝晒，寒风阵阵吹打，那些核桃才能从圆果里蹦到地上来。

Black Huckleberry

黑越橘

If you look closely you will find blueberry and huckleberry bushes under your feet, though they may be feeble and barren, throughout all our woods, the most preserving Native Americans, ready to shoot up into place and power at the next election among the plants, ready to reclothe the hills when man has laid them bare and feed all kinds of pensioners.

只要稍加留意，就能发现你身边处处有蓝莓和越橘树丛，就算枝干瘦小或是结果稀少，但任何小树林边、未被开发的原住民保留地上，都有它们，随时准备发芽长枝和其他植物们一起争高下。人们为了获得各种利益砍光山林，又正是它们重新将秃岭披上新绿。

What though the woods be cut down; it appears that this emergency was long ago anticipated and provided for by Nature, and the interregnum is not allowed to be a barren one. 

无论什么样的树林被砍伐后，它们就聚跟著冒出繁茂的枝条，正是为了不让任何土地裸露而生生不息，所精心预备的造化。

She not only begins to heal that scar, but she compensates us for the loss and refreshes us with fruits such as the forest did not produce. As the sandal wood is said to diffuse a perfume around the woodman who cuts it, so in this case Nature rewards with unexpected fruits the hand that lays her waste.

大自然这位母亲不但用它及时修复大地上的创口伤疤，还用它来补偿我们。既然森林不再了，那就用它们为我们提供美食吧。就像檀香树用香气使来砍伐的人如痴如醉，大自然即使是对糟蹋资源的人也予以这种意想不到的回报。

I state this to show how contented and thankful we ought to be. 

我说了这些，只是想提醒我们应该对此感到满足与感激。

读一本好书犹如行一段美妙旅程，旅行结束后，虽然你的空间看起来还是那样，但微妙的变化从而产生，我们的思考和行动也多少会有些变化，读这本书也有如走上一段旅程，不会有波澜壮阔、惊险曲折，却会令人回味，还会有无数小小乐趣和收获，因为我们的导游和同伴是梭罗。这本书里的梭罗与《瓦尔登湖》的哲人相比更像个可亲可爱的游伴和植物学老师，听他娓娓道来，觉得身边一切草木可爱和谐宝贵，原来生命就是这样相互依靠、相互扶持。梭罗通过分享他在自然里的喜悦和充实，唤醒了我们对自然和生命的感恩。

《今天，我选择》

It's quiet. It's early.

万籁寂静，时间还早。

The sky is still black. The world is still asleep.

天空仍漆黑一片，整个世界还在沉睡。

In a few moments the day will arrive. It will roar down the track with the rising of the sun. The stillness of the dawn will be exchanged for the noise of the day. The calm of solitude will be replaced by the pounding pace of the human race.

再过几分钟，白昼即将来临。它将与初升的太阳一起带我们进入新的一天。黎明的寂静将会被喧闹的白昼取代。而独处的宁静也会被人们急促的步伐而代替。

The refuge of the early morning will be invaded by decisions to be made and deadlines to be met.

平静的清晨也因一切要做的决定和一切要完成的任务而受到干扰。

For the next twelve hours I will be exposed to the day's demands. It is now that I must make a choice. I'm free to choose, and so I choose...

在未来的12个小时里，我的时间将会被要做的事情填满。现在，我必须做出选择。我可以自由选择，因此我选择......

I choose love …

我选择爱......

No occasion justifies hatred;

我们没有理由去仇恨;

No injustice warrants bitterness.

也没有理由去从恶。

I choose joy ...

I will refuse the temptation to be cynical, the tool of the lazy thinker.

我要拒绝愤世嫉俗的生活态度，这其实是一种懒人哲学。

I will live forgiven

Instead of clenching my fist at new assignments,

Nothing is won by force.

I hope you’ll be ignored so you know the importance of listening to others,

Whether I wish these things or not, they’re going to happen. And whether you benefit from them or not will depend upon your ability to see the message in your misfortunes.

《时间》

On Time

一锅米饭，放到第二天，水气就会干了一些，放到第三天，味道恐怕就有问题了。第四天，我们几乎可以发现，它已经变坏了。再放下去，眼看就要发霉了。

A pot of cooked rice, if left out overnight, will become a bit dry because of loss of water. On the third day, it may not taste as good; and on the fourth day, as you’ll discover, it becomes sour. If kept even longer, it will surely get mouldy.

是什么原因，使那锅米饭变馊变坏？

Why? What has made this happen?

是时间。

It is time.

可是，在浙江绍兴，年轻的父母生下女儿，他们就会在地窖里，埋下一坛坛米做的酒。多年以后，女儿长大了，这些酒就成为了嫁女儿婚礼上的佳酿。它有一个美丽惹人遐思的名字，叫女儿红。

However, there is another story about it. In Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, young parents brew a kind of wine with rice and store it underground in jars when they have a daughter. When the girl grows to the age of marriage, the wine is used to entertain guests at the wedding banquet. So it is given a fascinating name Nü Er Hong, literally “Daughter Red”.

是什么使那些平凡的米，变成芬芳甘醇的酒？

What turns the ordinary grains of rice into good wine?

也是时间。

The answer is also time.

到底，时间是善良，还是邪恶的魔术师呢？不是，时间只是一种简单的乘法，使原来的数值倍增而已。开始变坏的米 ，每一天都在不断的变得更腐臭。而开始变醇的美酒，每一分钟，都在继续增加它的芬芳。

Is time a benevolent magician, or a wicked witch? It is neither. It only serves as a multiplier, which makes the original number increase by several times. When cooked rice begins to go bad, it will become worse with each passing day; however, when it begins to turn into wine, it will become mellower minute by minute.

在人世间，我们也曾看到过天真的少年一旦开始堕落，便不免越陷越深，终于变得满脸风尘，面目可憎。但是相反的，时间却把温和的笑痕，体谅的延伸，成熟的风采，智慧的神韵添加在那些追求善良的人身上。

Our society has witnessed how naive and innocent young men become detestable [dɪˈtestəbl] villains: once they begin to degenerate morally, they sink deeper and deeper into the mire of sin and cannot get out. Yet for those in constant pursuit of kindness, time is a factor that makes them wiser and more mature, ever more ready to extend warmth and understanding to the people around them.

同样是煮熟的米，坏饭与美酒的差别在哪里呢？就在那一点点酒曲。

Cooked rice may grow mouldy, yet it may also turn into good wine. What is it that makes the difference? It is the tiny bit of yeast mixed in.

同样是父母所生的，谁堕落如禽兽，而谁又能提升完美的人呢？是内心深处，紧紧环抱不放的，求真求善求美的渴望。

We were all born to be human, yet some sink as low as beasts and some attain perfection of character. What again makes the difference? It is the desire for truth, kindness and beauty so dearly cherished in our hearts.

时间怎样对待你我呢？这就要看我们自己是以什么样的态度来期许我们自己了。

In which way do you want time to produce its effect on you? It all depends on what you expect of yourself.

Fear 《恐惧》

It is said that before entering the sea

a river trembles with fear.

据说在入海之前，

河流会因恐惧而颤抖。

She looks back at the path she has traveled,

from the peaks of the mountains,

the long winding road crossing forests and villages.

And in front of her,

that to enter

there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.

The river needs to take the risk

of entering the ocean

because only then will fear disappear,

because that’s where the river will know

it’s not about disappearing into the ocean,

but of becoming the ocean.

而是成为海洋！

But the sea and the shore will remain forever.

我永远走在这海岸上，在沙与沫之间

海风吹走了泡沫

但永恒的是海与岸

Once I filled my hand with mist.

Then I opened it and lo, the mist was a worm.

And I closed and opened my hand again, and behold there was a bird.

And again I closed and opened my hand, and in its hollow stood a man with a sad face, turned upward.

And again I closed my hand, and when I opened it there was naught but mist.

But I heard a song of exceeding sweetness.

曾经我的手中满是迷雾

我展开手时，迷雾是一条虫

我的手握了又展，看到的是一只鸟

我再次将手握了又展，空空之中伫立着一人，满面愁容，昂首向天

再一次，我握紧了手，张开却一无所有，只剩下迷雾

但，我听到了一首歌，温柔无比

It was but yesterday I thought myself a fragment quivering without rhythm in the sphere of life.

Now I know that I am the sphere, and all life in rhythmic fragments moves within me.

They say to me in their awakening, "You and the world you live in are but a grain of sand upon the infinite shore of an infinite sea."

And in my dream I say to them, "I am the infinite sea, and all worlds are but grains of sand upon my shore."

就在昨天，我还以为我只是碎屑一片，颤抖在生命的苍穹之中，毫无节奏

而今我已明白，我就是苍穹，生命全然是律动的碎片，就在我之中

他们醒来时对我说：“你和你存在的世界，只是沙粒，在无边之岸，无涯之海。”

在睡梦中我对他们说：“我正是无涯之海，世上万物只不过是我岸上的万千沙粒。”
