The Giving Tree 《爱心树》

Once there was a tree . . .

从前有一棵大树，

and she loved a little boy.

它喜欢上一个小男孩儿。

And every day the boy would come

男孩儿每天会跑到树下，

and he would gather her leaves

and make them into crowns and play king of the forest.

把树叶做成王冠，想像自己就是森林之王。

He would climb up her trunk

他也常常爬上树干，

and swing from her branches

在树枝上荡秋千，

and eat apples.

And they would play hide-and-go-seek.

And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade.

And the boy loved the tree . . .

And the tree was happy.

大树非常快乐。

But time went by.

但是时光流逝。

And the boy grew older.

孩子逐渐长大。

And the tree was often alone.

大树常常感到孤寂。

Then one day the boy came to the tree

有一天男孩来看大树，

and the tree said, "Come, Boy, come and climb

大树说：“来吧，孩子，

up my trunk and swing from my branches

爬到我身上来，在树枝上荡秋千，

and eat apples and play in my shade

吃几个苹果，再到阴凉里玩一会儿。

and be happy."

"I am too big to climb and play," said the boy.

“我已经大了，不爱爬树玩儿了，” 孩子说，

"I want to buy things and have fun.

I want some money.

Can you give me some money?"

"I’m sorry," said the tree, "but I have no money.

I have only leaves and apples.

我只有树叶和苹果。

Take my apples, Boy, and sell them

in the city. Then you will have money

And so the boy climbed up the

the boy came back

and the tree shook with joy

and she said, "Come, Boy,

对男孩说：“来吧，孩子，

climb up my trunk

爬到我的树干上，

and swing from my branches

在树枝上荡秋千，

and be happy."

你会很开心的！”

"I am too busy to climb trees," said the boy.

“我有很多事要做，没有时间爬树了。”男孩说，

"I want a house to keep me warm," he said.

“我需要一幢房子保暖。”他接着说，

"I want a wife and I want children,

“我要娶个妻子，还要生好多孩子，

and so I need a house.

所以我需要一幢房子。

Can you give me a house?"

你能给我一幢房子吗？”

"I have no house," said the tree.

“我没有房子，”大树说，

"The forest is my house,

“森林就是我的房子。

but you may cut off my branches

and build a house.

Then you will be happy."

And so the boy cut off

"I am too old and sad to play," said the boy.

至若春和景明，波澜不惊，上下天光，一碧万顷；

But during mild and bright spring weather, then the waves are unruffled and the azure translucence above and below stretches before your eyes for myriads of li, 

沙鸥翔集，锦鳞游泳，岸芷汀兰，郁郁青青。

when the water-birds fly down to congregate on the sands and fish with scales like glimmering silk disport themselves in the water, when the iris and orchids on the banks grow luxuriant and green; 

而或长烟一空，皓月千里，浮光跃金，静影沈璧，渔歌互答，此乐何极！

when the rolling waves glitter like gold and silent shadows in the water glimmer like jade, and the fishermen sing to each other for sheer joy,

登斯楼也，则有心旷神怡，宠辱偕忘、把酒临风，其喜洋洋者矣！

then men coming up to this pavilion may feel complete freedom of heart and ease of spirit, forgetting every worldly gain or setback, to hold their winecups in the breeze in absolute elation, delighted with life. 

嗟夫！予尝求古仁人之心，或异二者之为，

But again when I consider the men of old who possessed true humanity, they seem to have responded quite differently. 

何哉？不以物喜，不以己悲，

The reason, perhaps, may be this: natural beauty was not enough to make them happy, nor their own situation enough to make them sad.

居庙堂之高，则忧其民；处江湖之远，则忧其君。

When such men are high in the government or at court, their first concern is for the people; when they retire to distant streams and lakes, their first concern is for their sovereign. 

是进亦忧，退亦忧；然则何时而乐耶？

Thus they worry both when in office and when in retirement. When, then, can they enjoy themselves in life? 

其必曰：“先天下之忧而忧，后天下之乐而乐矣！”

No doubt they are concerned before anyone else and enjoy themselves only after everyone else finds enjoyment. 

噫！微斯人，吾谁与归！

Surely these are the men in whose footsteps I should follow!

亲爱的朋友，你好，我是永清，欢迎收听为你读英语美文，我在北京向你问好。前两天我看了一部拍摄于2004年的奥斯卡最佳影片Million Dollar Baby《百万美元宝贝》，电影的前半段是励志的，电影的后半段是震撼的。在电影里，我听到了叶芝这首诗THE LAKE ISLE OF INNISFREE，非常喜欢，想要和你分享：

“我就要起身走了，到茵尼斯弗利岛，

造座小茅屋在那里，枝条编墙糊上泥；

我要养上一箱蜜蜂，种上九行豆角，

独住在蜂声嗡嗡的林间草地。

那儿安宁会降临我，安宁慢慢儿滴下来，

从晨的面纱滴落到蛐蛐歌唱的地方；

那儿半夜闪着微光，中午染着紫红光彩，

而黄昏织满了红雀的翅膀。

我就要起身走了，因为从早到晚从夜到朝

我听得湖水在不断地轻轻拍岸；

不论我站在马路上还是在灰色人行道，

总听得它在我心灵深处呼唤。”

2014年去大理旅行的时候，我碰到一位客栈老板，他把一年的时间分成了三部分，一部分在大理经营客栈，一部分在北京经营公司，一部分在洛杉矶陪伴家人。当时的我倍受震撼，原来生活还可以有这种可能性。现在，这种可能性在慢慢地变成现实，2021年底我告别了工作了11年多的世界五百强，开始尝试FIRE，也就是Financial Independence Retire Early的生活方式，现在，一部分时间在云南，一部分时间在北京，还有一部分时间会在世界各地。水哥说：“坚持自己喜欢的事物和稳定的生活之间，我只选择了前者，但是我发现，当坚持选择前者的时候，后者自然就来了。”现在，天时地利人和，我终于能回到北京呆一段时间，内心也如在云南时一样安稳和踏实，安驻于当下的北京。

愿你和叶芝一样，拥有一片属于自己的小天地，也许身在都市的你我无法找到一个完全远离尘嚣的地方，但我们可以给自己找一个安静的角落，也许是自己的家，也许是某棵树下，某片湖边，也许是沉浸在喜欢的事情里，也许是安静地听这期节目的瞬间。在这里，你可以放下一身的疲惫，让自己放空，积蓄能量，聆听自己内心深处的呼唤, 舒服地做自己。

ChatGPT的到来（全名：Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer），让我们充满危机感，ChatGPT能够通过学习和理解人类的语言来进行对话，还能根据聊天的上下文进行互动，真正像人类一样来聊天交流，甚至能完成撰写邮件、视频脚本、文案、翻译、代码，写论文等任务。在不久的将来，人工智能能做的还会越来越多。

纳瓦尔说: “如果社会可以培训你，那么总有一天，社会也可以编写代码，用计算机取代你。”如何才能不被计算机取代？答应是：做独一无二的你自己。因为只有在“做自己”这件事情上，没有人能与你竞争。

CHOOSING TO BE YOURSELF

选择做你自己

A lot of what goes on today is what many of you are doing right now—beating yourself up and scribbling notes and saying, “I need to do this, and I need to do that, and I need to do...” No, you don’t need to do anything. 

当今社会存在的一个普遍现象，也是许多人此刻正在做的事情，就是苦苦挣扎，自我鞭策:“我需要做这件事，我需要做那件事，我需要......”不，你什么都不需要做。

All you should do is what you want to do. If you stop trying to figure out how to do things the way other people want you to do them, you get to listen to the little voice inside your head that wants to do things a certain way. Then, you get to be you. 

你唯一应该做的事，是你自己想做的事。别人总希望你以特定的方式做事，但如果不再费心去揣摩别人的期待，你就能听到自己脑海中那个微弱的声音。那个声音代表了你真实的想法。倾听它，你就可以做自己了。

No one in the world is going to beat you at being you. You’re never going to be as good at being me as I am. I’m never going to be as good at being you as you are. Certainly, listen and absorb, but don’t try to emulate. It’s a fool’s errand. Instead, each person is uniquely qualified at something. They have some specific knowledge, capability, and desire nobody else in the world does, purely from the combinatorics of human DNA and development. 

在“做自己”这件事情上，没有人能与你竞争。你永远不会像我一样擅长做我自己，我也永远不会像你一样擅长做你自己。当然，做人要虚心聆听，博采众长，但不要盲目模仿。模仿他人纯属徒劳。相反，每个人都有独一无二的资质技能、专业知识、能力才干、个人欲望，这些是世界上其他人所没有的，是先天基因和后天经验共同作用的结果。

Your goal in life is to find the people, business, project, or art that needs you the most. There is something out there just for you. What you don’t want to do is build checklists and decision frameworks built on what other people are doing. You’re never going to be them. You’ll never be good at being somebody else. 

你的人生目标是找到最需要你的人、事业、项目或艺术。大千世界，芸芸众生，总有一些人和事会与你完美契合。不要基于别人正在做的事为你自己列清单、做决策。你永远不会成为他们，你永远都不擅长做另一个人。

我的时间不多。可能有点词不达意，我的意思是，你出去买冰淇淋，很快就会回来。但是我感觉这是最后一封信，因为只剩下一件事要对你说了。

It isn't to go down memory lane or make you buy a lamp, you can take care of yourself without any help from me. It's to tell you how much you move me, how you changed me. You made me a man, by loving me Holly. 

而这件事不是要你去回忆我们的过往，也不是要你去买一盏台灯——没有我，你能照顾好你自己——而是我要告诉你，你让我莫名感动，你改变了我。

And for that, I am eternally grateful... Literally. If you can promise me anything, promise me that whenever you're sad, or unsure, or you lose complete faith, that you'll try to see yourself through my eyes.

你说你希望我再投入地爱一次，也许有一天我会的，可是爱有很多种，而这次是我一生中惟一的一次，美好、糟糕、短暂、永无止境的一次，我们谁都没法活着走出来。我妈妈再次开怀大笑的时候，我才有了新计划。

She's never seen the world. She's never seen Ireland, so I'm taking her back to where we started. Maybe now she'll understand. I don't know how you did it, but you brought me back from the dead. I'll write to you again soon.

Many people come to us

in our lives.

But most of them

are just trivial passangers.

And the flight of birds, the gulls and rooks and little brown wavering things which flit out and along the edge of the chalk-pits, is once more refreshment to me, utterly untempered. A merle is singing in a bramble thicket; the dew has not yet dried off the bramble leaves. A feather of a moon floats across the sky; the distance sends forth homely murmurs; the sun warms my cheeks. And all of this is pure joy. No hawk of dread and horror keeps swooping down and bearing off the little birds of happiness. No accusing conscience starts forth and beckons me away from pleasure. Everywhere is supreme and flawless beauty.

天空中各种禽鸟的飞翔，海鸥、白鸭嘴以及那些往来徘徊于白垩坑边的棕色小东西对我都是欣慰，它们是那样自由自在，不受拘束。一只乌鸫正鸣啭在黑莓丛中，那里夜间还晨露未干。天际浮着一轮轻如羽毛的月亮；远方传来熟悉的天籁之音；而阳光暖暖地照射在 我的脸颊。这一切都是多么愉快。这里见不到凶猛可怕的鹰飞扑而下，把那些快乐的小鸟攫去。这里不再有歉疚不安的良心把我从这逸乐之中唤走。到处都是无限美丽，完美无瑕。

And yet the “green hill,” where dwell beauty and kindliness, is still far away. Will it ever be nearer? Men have fought even on this green hill where I am lying. By the rampart markings on its chalk and grass, it has surely served for an encampment. The beauty of day and night, the lark's song, the sweet-scented growing things, the rapture of health, and of pure air, the majesty of the stars, and the gladness of sunlight, of song and dance and simple friendliness, have never been enough for men. We crave our turbulent fate. Can wars, then, ever cease?

然而那美与仁爱所在的“青山”离我们还很遥远。它会走近些吗？人们甚至在我正躺着的这座青山上也打过仗。根据白垩岩层与草地上的堡垒的痕迹，这里肯定曾宿过士兵。白昼与夜晚的美好，云雀的欢歌，香花与芳草，健康的欢乐，空气的纯净，星辰的庄严，阳光的和煦，还有那轻歌与曼舞，淳朴的友情，这一切都是我们渴求不厌的，可人们却偏偏渴求那浊流般的命运。战争能永远终止吗？

It is happiness greater than I have known for four years and four months, to lie here and let that thought go on its wings, quiet and free as the wind stealing soft from the sea, and blessed as the sunlight on this green hill.

这是四年零四个月以来我从未领略过的快乐。我躺在草地上，思想插上翅膀，那安宁和自由如海面上轻轻袭来的和风，那幸福如这座青山上的明媚阳光。

大家好，我是永清，刚才我为你读的这段文字出自电影《指环王1：护戒使者》，原本在夏尔无忧无虑生活的Frodo，被意外赋予了摧毁至尊魔戒的艰巨任务。在Frodo身上，我经常会看到自己。Frodo一路的经历，像极了我们长达三年的抗击疫情之路。我们经历了新冠病毒从阿尔法，到德尔塔，再到奥密克戎的演变，就像Frodo和护戒小队一路遭遇戒灵，奥克，炎魔各种妖魔鬼怪的追击。

在国家的保护下，我们大多数人安全度过了病毒最肆虐的三年，但也有人失去了生命。随着毒株越来越弱，我们的防疫政策在不断放开，我们也看到了黎明的曙光，但在黎明到来之前，仍有一段黑暗和冷雨。最近，奥密克戎海啸式地席卷全国，我们的亲戚朋友，包括我们中的大多数人都纷纷中招。朋友圈的主题变成了“阳”，大家都在分享中招后的体验和经验。我们的心情也经历着从对病毒的恐惧，到生病中的痛苦，到接纳，到恢复后的坦然。

我想起Frodo对Gandalf说: “I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened. 我真希望自己从没拿到过这枚魔戒。真希望这一切都不曾发生。” 我们也和Frodo一样，多么希望疫情从未发生。Gandalf的回答让我们茅塞顿开：“So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. 天下适逢其会的苍生都会这么想, 但这不由得他们做主。我们所能做主的是在这有限的时日之内如何应对。”疫情当下，很多时候由不得我们做主，但我们能做主的是我们应对的方式和心态。

诗人雪莱在《西风颂》里写道：“If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind. 如果冬天来了，春天还会远吗？”尽管冬日寒冷降临，无星黑夜遮天蔽日，阳光难透深重纱雾，我们仍要心怀希望，行经苦涩冻雨。雪莱曾在1821年春天的一个笔记本中这样写道：“The spring rebels not against winter but it succeeds it--the dawn rebels not against night but it disperses it. 春天不是要反对冬天，而是要承袭冬天——黎明不是要反对黑夜，而是要疏散黑夜。”我们无法逃脱黑暗，也无法逃脱寒冬，但我们一起可以携手，度过寒冬，也度过黎明前的黑暗。相信，寒冬终将过去，我们将迎来温暖的春天。黑夜终将过去，我们将迎来充满希望的黎明。
