When a narcissist wants to discard you, it's a confusing, scary, and very painful situation. Narcissists like to keep their sources of supply close at hand, so when they decide to cut you off, it can be a brutal experience for the discarded source.

So what should you expect from a narcissist's discard?

First of all, know that the discard may come suddenly—and for no apparent reason. The narcissist may seem to be working on your relationship and then drop you without warning. You might feel blindsided and heartbroken by this sudden change.

What is happening internally with the narcissist is not always apparent externally. There are several reasons that could lead a narcissist to discard you: They might have found someone new, or they might just simply want to move on and cut ties with you.

Narcissists are also known to discard their sources of supply when they no longer find them useful—either because the source has been sufficiently drained of resources and energy, or because the source has become too aware of the narcissist's manipulation tactics and will no longer play along.

In either case, it's important that you understand that it's not your fault; it's the narcissist who is unwilling or unable to grow and/or change.
