Think your dog should get dessert? So does Ben & Jerry's.
The Vermont ice cream company is releasing frozen dog treats, which will go on sale in US supermarkets and pet stores later this month. Doggie Desserts will come in 110-gram cups, which cost $2.99 each, or $4.99 for four.
The treats come in two flavors: pumpkin with cookies and peanut butter with pretzels. They're made from the same ingredients Ben & Jerry's uses in its non-dairy human desserts.
Lindsay Bumps, a global marketing expert with Ben & Jerry's, said the company started developing its dog treats in early 2020. She said that the company worked with experts to make sure the treats are safe.
As with any treat, owners should go slow when giving it to their pet for the first time, giving them a spoonful at a time, said Bumps, who is also a veterinary technician.
In October, Unilever, which owns Ben & Jerry's, said that sales of its ice cream had increased by more than 10% in the previous three months, as consumers treat themselves to sweet foods during the coronavirus pandemic.
Bumps said that with Doggie Desserts people can treat their dogs like they're treating themselves.
