A man from Taiwan has been sent to prison for 10 months after tricking his parents into giving him money by telling them that he was a top student at several universities.
The parents of the 35-year-old, whose surname is Kuo, said he got the money from them between 2007 and 2013. Kuo told his parents that he needed the money to pay for his studies, living costs, and research projects.
Kuo started studying at a private technology college in 2004. But in 2007, he told his parents that he had moved to National Taiwan University (NTU) to continue his studies and began asking them for money. Then, in 2009, he said he needed to move to the US and Canada for his studies.
But in 2017, the man's parents found out that their son had never been a student at NTU, and that certificates and documents he had used to ask them for money were fake.
In court, they said that he had received more than $350,000 from them. However, the court found him guilty of stealing only about $6,000 from them, and for forging an NTU student card.
Kuo admitted that he had made a fake student card to show to his parents, but argued that the money he got from them was not stolen because he had worked for them as a child without being paid.
