A small town in Finland has announced a bid to host the 2032 Summer Olympics as part of its campaign to raise awareness about the effects of climate change.
Salla, which claims to be the coldest town in Finland, admitted that the idea was "crazy," but said that it has an important message.
"We want to keep Salla as it is, and our winters cold and full of snow," Erkki Parkkinen, mayor of Salla, said in a statement. "So, there was this crazy idea: to host the Summer Games in one of the coldest towns on the planet."
Parkkinen described 2032 as a turning point for Salla — where temperatures can drop to -50 degrees Celsius — saying it and other Arctic locations will "cease to exist as we know them" if we fail to stop climate change.
Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Salla is known for its pristine nature and national parks that are ideal for hiking, skiing, and other outdoor activities.
In a YouTube video promoting the bid, residents of Salla are seen eating ice-cream in a frozen lake and playing beach volleyball. Some say they are waiting for the snow to melt for good.
