A rich 90-year-old woman from Hong Kong has been scammed out of about $33 million by criminals who said they were Chinese officials, the South China Morning Post reports.
In July last year, the woman received a call from a man who said he was a mainland public security official. He informed her that her identity had been stolen and it was being used for crimes in mainland China.
The police told the Morning Post that a 19-year-old university student then went to the woman's home and gave her a cellphone to talk with the scammers. The woman lives in Victoria Peak, the wealthiest area in Hong Kong.
The scammers told the woman she would need to pay them to help their investigation, and they would return her money after they were done.
Between August and January, the woman made 11 deposits to three different bank accounts, the police said. One of the scammers even went with the woman to a bank to make one of the deposits.
The woman later realized that she was being scammed and contacted the local Hong Kong police.
Police were able to freeze some of the scammers' accounts, which contained a total of over $1 million, but they got away with the other money, making this the biggest phone scam in Hong Kong history.
