Many of us have taken days off work when we probably shouldn't have. Some people might take a three-day weekend for their birthday, or call in sick to recover after a party. But a man in Italy is being called the "king" of absences after being accused of failing to come to work for 15 years.
Italian officials say that 67-year-old Salvatore Scumace has received about $650,000 from his place of work since 2005, even though he never actually went to work during that time.
According to The Telegraph, Scumace only went to his first day of work at Pugliese Ciaccio hospital, in southern Italy, to accept the job. He did not return to do any work, but continued to receive his salary each month.
He was supposed to be working as a fire safety officer. Scumace is not just accused of taking a salary he did not work for; he is also said to have threatened his boss to stop her from reporting his absences.
His boss then retired, and his new boss never checked if he came to work. For years, Italy has had problems with government employees who get salaries but never actually go to work. Scumace's 15-year absence was discovered as part of a larger investigation into absences by government employees.
Another 57 of the same hospital's employees have now lost their jobs because of long absences, and are also under investigation.
