A kayaker who found a message in a bottle in a Delaware river has returned the letter to the woman who wrote it 35 years ago.
Brad Wachsmuth thought the bottle in the Broadkill River was just trash when he saw it on August 8, WBOC-TV reported.
"As we usually do as kayakers, we try to pick up trash out of the water when we can," he told the station.
But Wachsmuth's friend saw there was something inside, and the two took out the letter written by Cathi Riddle and her cousin, Stacey Wells, on August 1, 1985. Part of the letter described their pets and asked readers if they had any of their own.
"Please write back when you receive this and tell us about yourself," the letter said.
Wachsmuth brought the letter to the Milton Historical Society, which contacted the family and put the two in touch.
Riddle still lived in the area, and Wachsmuth was able to return the letter to her. He said he was surprised it was in the same river after 35 years.
"My cousin and I were staying at the beach and we decided to write the letter and send it out and see how far it went," Riddle said. "It didn't travel very far, but perhaps it traveled the world and came back."
