Hayek Hospital, just outside of Lebanon's capital, Beirut, has taken meat and eggs off the menu, becoming what it says is the world's first vegan hospital.
In 2020, the hospital started offering both vegan and non-vegan meals while giving patients information about the benefits and risks of the diets. However, starting on March 1, Hayek Hospital began offering only vegan food.
The hospital's menu now includes vegan burgers, steaks and croissants, as well as traditional Lebanese food that has been made without animal products.
The hospital wrote on Instagram that its patients will no longer be served meals with food such as ham, cheese, milk and eggs, which it says may have caused their health problems in the first place.
The hospital wrote that because the World Health Organization (WHO) has added processed meat to the same cancer-causing group as tobacco, "then serving meat in a hospital is like serving cigarettes in a hospital."
However, the WHO says that while processed meat and cigarettes are in the same group, this only means that studies have shown that they can both cause cancer, not that they both have the same risk of causing it.
