British writer Jane Austen, one of the most influential and celebrated authors in English literature, was born on December 16, 1775 in the village of Steventon in Hampshire, England.
Her first book, Sense and Sensibility, was published in 1811, when she was 35. It was published anonymously as being "By a Lady."

In fact, Austen never saw her own name published on any of her books, including her most well-known novel Pride and Prejudice. It wasn't until Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published five months after her death in 1817 that her real name was given as the author.
Austen's main characters were upper-class women, or those from rich families. Her stories are known for being clever and funny, and were often about love and marriage.
But they were also commentaries on the society she lived in, and are studied in English literature courses at universities around the world.
