Almost 200 people in Taiwan changed their names to "salmon" to get free sushi from a restaurant.
Japanese restaurant Sushiro offered a two-day promotion on March 17 and 18. The restaurant said that any customer whose name included the Chinese characters for "salmon," or gui yu, would get a free all-you-can- eat sushi meal for themselves and five friends.
When many people started changing their names to "salmon" to get free sushi, the government had to ask them to stop. Deputy Interior Minister Chen Tsung-yen told journalists that the name changes caused a lot of extra work for the government. Journalists in Taiwan called the situation "salmon chaos."
At least 186 people changed their names for the promotion. Some of the names that customers chose were very unusual. One student in Taichung changed her name to "Kuo Salmon Rice Bowl" — although she said she planned to change it back the next day. Other examples of unusual names were "Salmon Prince," "Meteor Salmon King" and "Salmon Fried Rice."
