Badly behaved US airline passengers have been given a record $1 million in potential fines so far this year.
Airlines have reported about 3,900 cases of badly behaved passengers this year, 75% of which include refusing to wear a mask, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
An official from the FAA said that $1 million is a single-year record for potential fines against passengers, who can still try and get their fines canceled.
The FAA has also started investigations against 682 travelers this year, breaking the previous record of 310 in 2004.
The most recent cases announced by the FAA involve everything from passengers refusing to wear a mask to punching a member of staff in the face.
Two of the cases could be fined more than $40,000 each for their behavior towards airline staff and passengers.
Alcohol is often a reason for bad behavior. American Airlines recently announced that it will continue to ban alcohol sales in the main cabin until January 18, which is when passengers will be allowed to stop wearing masks.
Air travel in the US has returned to nearly 80% of what it was before the pandemic, but airlines have cut the number of flights by a similar amount, so planes are crowded.
Tens of thousands of flights have been delayed or canceled this summer because of bad weather and airlines not having enough staff, according to data from FlightAware, making travel even more stressful than before.
