Taking a week off work can reduce stress, but it's easy to check email and reply to messages from colleagues while you're away. But what if everyone at your workplace had the same week off? That's exactly what one company has done to help fight burnout.
Burnout — feeling exhausted and doing poor work because of long-term workplace stress — is becoming more common during the COVID-19 pandemic. To help, employees at dating app Bumble were all given one week's paid vacation from June 21 to June 27.
Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd gave the app's 700 employees the extra days off on top of their usual vacation time. The company said that as more people are getting vaccinated and COVID-19 restrictions are starting to end, it wanted to give employees an "opportunity to shut off and focus on themselves for a week."
A few employees worked during the week to help the app's users if they had any problems, but they'll get their week off at another time.
Bumble isn't the first company to give all of its staff a week off, however. In April, most of LinkedIn's almost 16,000 employees got the same week off. Social media management company Hootsuite also announced that its staff will get a week off in July.
A 2021 survey from job site Indeed found that 52% of people felt burned out, compared to 43% in 2020. Almost 70% said that their burnout got worse during the pandemic.
