Maki Kaji, who created the numbers puzzle Sudoku, has died at age 69, his Japanese company said.
Known as the "Father of Sudoku," Kaji created the puzzle to be easy for children and others who didn't want to think too hard.
The game didn't become a hit until 2004, about 20 years after it was created, when a New Zealand fan suggested it be published in British newspaper The Times. But it took more than two years before the game became popular in its home country.
Sudoku was never trademarked except in Japan, which helped it become so popular in other countries, said Nikoli Co., Kaji's puzzle company. It is now believed to be the world's most popular pencil puzzle.
Over his lifetime, Kaji traveled to more than 30 countries sharing his love of puzzles. According to Nikoli, about 200 million people in 100 countries have taken part in Sudoku championships.
Nikoli has also provided original puzzles to more than 100 media companies, 10 of them outside Japan.
Born on the northern island of Hokkaido, Kaji started Japan's first puzzle magazine after dropping out of Keio University in Tokyo. He started Nikoli in 1983, and created Sudoku around the same time.
Yoshinao Anpuku, who will take over as Nikoli's CEO, said Kaji made friends easily and had a "unique and playful approach toward life."
