George Orwell was born in India but went to school in England. After he left school, he got a job with the Indian Imperial Police in Burma. At the time, Burma — now Myanmar — was treated as part of India by Britain, which ruled both countries.
Orwell didn't like how the British treated the local people in Burma, and in 1927 he decided to leave his job and become a writer instead.
Like another famous author, Ernest Hemingway, Orwell went to Spain during its civil war in the 1930s. He went to report on the war but stayed and fought against the fascist side.
Society and politics are important topics in Orwell's most popular books. He got the idea for Animal Farm, in which animals take control of the farm they live on, from the Russian Revolution of 1917.
And Orwell's most famous book, 1984, follows Winston Smith as he tries to live under a government that allows no personal freedom.
A lot of ideas in 1984 have become part of the English language and culture. For example, the world of 1984 is ruled by Big Brother. We now call any government or organization that tries to control what people say and do "Big Brother."
Orwell died at age 46 from tuberculosis in 1950, the year after 1984 was published.
