English has gotten a lot of its words through other languages, including Portuguese — the language that came from Portugal but is now spoken all over the world.
In fact, only 5% of Portuguese speakers actually live in Portugal, with the language spoken by many people in parts of Asia, Africa and South America. Brazil is the largest Portuguese-speaking country, with a population of over 210 million.

The very first Europeans to visit Japan were from Portugal, and they left their mark on the language. The word "tempura" is used by English speakers around the world for the popular Japanese food. But the Japanese name tenpura probably came from the Portuguese word tempero, which means "seasoning."
Other names for food have come to English through Portuguese. For example, the word "banana" has its earliest origins in West Africa, and this was borrowed by the Portuguese language. The Portuguese were the first to bring bananas to Europe, giving the name for the fruit to English speakers.
