A 21-year-old climber who went to prison two years ago for climbing the UK's tallest skyscraper has climbed another building in London, this time to raise awareness of climate change.
George King-Thompson climbed up the 36-story Stratosphere Tower, an apartment building in east London. He didn't use any equipment, and got to the top in less than half an hour.
King-Thompson said he chose the skyscraper because he was shocked by the floods that recently happened in the area. Pudding Mill Lane, a nearby train station, was one of eight stations that closed because of flooding on July 25, when almost a month's worth of rain fell on central London.
"I wanted to raise awareness to the seriousness of climate change at the moment, because only a week before that, there was a heat wave throughout London," King-Thompson said. "I hope to raise awareness by climbing this building to urge political leaders to take action immediately."
The young climber said he spent a week preparing for the climb, studying the 147-meter building and trying to climb a few floors at night in secret.
King-Thompson agreed that climbing buildings is dangerous but said he planned the climb so he would not be a danger to the public.
King-Thompson was arrested in 2019 after climbing the Shard in London — the UK's tallest skyscraper at 310 meters tall. He was given six months in prison in October 2019, but was allowed out after three.
