Nintendo's April-June profit decreased 13% from the same period in 2020 as sales driven by coronavirus restrictions begin to slow, the Japanese game maker reports.
The company's profit for the quarter was about $840 million, down from around $940 million the previous year.
Sales of the Switch console were down 22% during the period, and the hit game Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold 10 million units in April-June 2020, sold just 1.26 million copies in the same period this year.
Nintendo's profits increased in 2020 as people turned to at-home entertainment during the coronavirus pandemic. But experts don't expect this to last as vaccines allow life to begin to return to normal in many places.
This change is expected to hurt Nintendo, which tends to attract casual gamers, more than companies such as Sony and Microsoft, which offer consoles for more serious gamers.
In its own forecasts for the full financial year ending March 2022, Nintendo expects $3.1 billion in profit on $14.5 billion in sales. This is a 29% drop in profits and a 9% sales decrease from the previous financial year.
Upcoming games for the financial year include The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and Mario Party Superstars, as well as Pokemon games.
