Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away is being made into a new play that will open in Tokyo in February 2022.
The 2001 Studio Ghibli film is being adapted into a play by English writer and theater director John Caird. The main character, Chihiro, will be played by two actresses: Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi.
Hashimoto has been in a number of films and TV shows, but this will be her first major stage role.
 
Kamishiraishi is known for her voice work in anime Your Name and was the star of the 2014 film, Lady Maiko.
 
Caird was the co-director of Les Misérables when it opened on the West End in 1985, and it is London's longest-running stage musical and the second-longest running musical in the world.
 
He is also known for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Caird's work in Japan includes directing Hamlet with all Japanese actors, and the musical Jane Eyre.
 
Toshio Suzuki from Studio Ghibli said that both he and Miyazaki liked Caird's vision for the play.
