Every May, people from around the world come to the village of Brockworth, near Gloucester in England, to chase after a large wheel of Gloucester cheese as it rolls down a very steep hill. This strange competition is called "Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake," and it has been done for hundreds of years.
The goal of the race is to catch the cheese, which gets a 1-second head start and can roll at over 110 kilometers per hour, making it nearly impossible to catch. So the winner is usually just the person who can get to the finish line at the bottom of Cooper's Hill first. But not everyone gets there without breaking a bone or hurting themselves.
Cooper's Hill is so steep that participants start the race sitting down instead of standing up. And when they get to the bottom, there are rugby players from Brockworth Rugby Club to catch them.
The wheel of cheese, which can weigh as much as 4 kilograms, sometimes even hits people watching the event as it goes down the hill.
Each year, there are three to four races for men and one for women. The prize for each race is, of course, a wheel of Gloucester cheese.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake was canceled in 2020 and 2021. However, this strange but very British competition should return to the hill in May 2022.
