A survey has found that, out of people in 25 countries, people in the UK get drunk more often than anyone else.
The Global Drug Survey (GDS) tries to find trends among people who use drugs and alcohol. The 2020 survey was answered by over 110,000 people between early November and late December 2019, including over 5,000 people in the UK. The survey found that Brits had been drunk an average of 34 times in the last year. This was more than twice as often as people in some other countries, including Spain, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Poland.
The survey defined getting drunk as having so much alcohol that your behavior changes, you can't focus on things, and your speech and balance are affected. Across all countries, people got drunk an average of 21 times in the last year. People in Australia and Denmark got drunk 32 times, the second most after British people.
This is the second year in a row the UK has been at the top of the list, even though pubs in the country were closed for large parts of 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. However, another GDS survey found that 48% of people in Britain had been drinking more since the start of the pandemic.
