Before 2020, words like "pandemic" "lockdown," and "social distancing" didn't often come up in daily conversation. But the coronavirus pandemic has made some words more popular, as well as given us new slang to help us talk about our "new normal."
 
Language expert Tony Thorne from King's College London has been making a list of about 200 words that have been used more often during pandemic, or have been created because of it. Here are just a few examples from his list.
 
COVID-19 has many nicknames, with some people calling it "the Rona," or sometimes "Miss Rona." In Australia, where it's common to shorten words and add "o" to them to make slang words, people call it "the pando."
 
"Doomscrolling" describes the action of scrolling through bad news online for a long period of time, and was even chosen as Word of the Year 2020 in a December survey in New Zealand. Instead of doomscrolling, it might be better to relax with a "quarantini." The word can be used for any alcoholic drink enjoyed at "locktail hour," which is when you drink cocktails during a lockdown.
 
Many of us have had to wear masks in public for the first time, which has given some people "maskne." The word comes from "mask" and "acne." But some people don't wear masks in public when they're told to, or follow other rules to help keep people safe. For people like this, there's a simple word: "covidiot."
