With much of the entertainment industry on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, websites like Cameo, which let people pay to receive personal messages from celebrities, have seen an increase in business.
Started in 2017, Cameo lets users choose from over 30,000 celebrities to receive a video message from. When a user has chosen a celebrity, they have up to 250 characters to describe what they want the celebrity to say and do.
The price of a Cameo video starts from $1 and increases depending on the celebrity. Caitlyn Jenner is the most expensive celebrity on the website, with a message costing $2,500.
A video from rapper Snoop Dogg costs $900. Actress Lindsay Lohan is available for $355, and a message from skateboarder Tony Hawk is $200. Some celebrities will also let users pay to chat with them.
According to Broadbandchoices, by the end of July 2020, comedian and actor Michael Rapaport had gotten almost $250,000 from Cameo videos — more than any other celebrity. Each video from Rapaport costs $199.
According to Fast Company, the number of celebrities signing up to Cameo increased by 160% in March as sports and movies were stopped by the coronavirus pandemic. Cameo has said it expects to get more than $100 million in bookings this year. The company takes 25% of the money from each booking.
