The Turkish city of Kilis has given free bicycles to more than 9,500 children. To get a bike, children must do well at school, agree to ride it for at least an hour each day, and get a relative to quit smoking.
 
According to the Mayor of Kilis, Hasan Kara, the city plans to give a total of 15,000 bikes to local children.
 
According to data from 2015, more than 39 percent of men and 12 percent of women smoke in Turkey. In a speech in 2007, then-prime minister Recep Erdoğan said that getting people to stop smoking was as important as fighting terrorism.
 
However, getting people to stop smoking is not the only reason for the free bikes; they are also part of a plan to improve life in the city.
 
To keep riders safe from cars, the city has also built a new bike lane that is more than six kilometers long. Kara said he hopes to build over 30 kilometers of bike lanes across Kilis, including one along its main shopping street.
 
So far the free bikes and new bike lanes have been paid for by the city and Turkey’s Ministry of Health, but there isn't enough money to finish the projects. Kara is asking the European Union for money to help. “Perhaps Kilis will become a bicycle city, like [one in] Holland,” he said.
