Couscous has been added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The list includes things such as food, festivals and activities that are important to cultures around the world.
Couscous was suggested by the North African nations of Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. Not only was the food added to the list, but also the knowledge of how to make it.
Couscous is usually made from wheat or barley, which is ground using a millstone and then made into very small balls by hand. These are steamed in a special pot, which also has a space for cooking meat and vegetables.
Couscous is traditionally made by women, and is eaten at both normal meals and at special events like weddings or parties. It can be served as a main meal with meat, fish, eggs or vegetables; as a dessert with sugar, honey or milk; or even for breakfast with butter. It is the national food of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
