One of 2020's most popular television shows was the Netflix documentary Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. It shared stories about owners of tigers, lions and wildlife attractions in the US.
However, with several US senators citing the show as inspiration for a new bill that would ban people from owning big cats, it seems not everybody was a fan.
The bill is called the Big Cat Public Safety Act, and would ban the private ownership of animals such as lions and tigers. It would also ban people from moving big cats between states or breeding them. Zoos and certain organizations would still be able to own them, but public contact with the animals wouldn't be allowed.
The bill is being supported by senators from both of the largest US political parties. Republican senator Susan Collins said that big cats belong in nature, and that private owners will not always care for them properly. Democratic senator Richard Blumenthal wrote on Twitter that the bill would not only protect big cats, but it would also make people safer.
In December, a similar bill was voted on by the House of Representatives and won 272 to 114. However, it didn't become law.
According to the World Wildlife Fund, there are around 5,000 captive tigers in the US, which is more than the 3,900 that are thought to remain in the wild.
