A teacher in India has won this year's $1 million Global Teacher Prize and shared half of the money with the other top finalists.
On December 3, Ranjitsinh Disale, 32, was announced as the winner by actor Stephen Fry in a virtual event from London. Disale gave the other nine finalists more than $55,000 each.
 
Disale is the first person in the competition's six-year history to share the prize. He said he was sharing it to support the other finalists' work. "I believe, together, we can change this world," he said.
 
There were over 12,000 nominations and applications for the prize from more than 140 countries.
 
Since 2009, Disale has worked at Zilla Parishad Primary School in the village of Paritewadi, about 300 kilometers southeast of Mumbai.
 
When he arrived, the textbooks were not even in the local language. School attendance could be as low as 2%, and girls often got married as teenagers.
 
Disale learned the local language and translated the textbooks. He also added QR codes to the textbooks to help each of his students find the extra information that they needed.
