From Sobriety To Recovery: An Addiction Recovery Podcast

You attach meaning to words

Listen Later

Ep #160 - We have covered a lot about the meaning of words, the human experience, and our programming over the last month and to wrap up this story arch we finish by discussing how you, and your mind, attach meaning to the words you use, hear, and experience in your life.

Words are just words. They have definitions that help us all agree on what a word means so we can communicate, yeah, this just in...that's pretty close to the definition of language. Once the definition of a word is established, you inevitably attach a meaning to a word based on what you feel inside yourself when you hear the word. From there you have a way of saying the word to yourself and out loud - this can be in tone, volume, and cadence. The picture you create in your mind when you hear or use the word has a huge influence on the trigger it evokes in you.

Triggers are not all doom and gloom. Someone says, "I love you," and the meaning you have attached to the word love evokes the particular feeling you have associated with the word love. Timing of the, "I love you," matters too. Is it after they did something nice for you or after they wronged you in some way?

There are so many layers to the feelings we have associated to words because we have heard them so many times from so many people. As a child we have little comprehension of what love really means. We are taught by our parental figures what love is supposed to mean, according to them, and how they articulate their explanation can either help or hinder the child's understanding - and this is just the iceberg's tip of the depth to which I could write about the meaning of love and the levels of it's deciphering are to numerous to write here.

The key takeaway here is that words have meanings, which you know, but what you might not be as aware of is that your feeling will not be exactly like anyone else's nor will theirs be yours. It's not possible. The picture you have associated with the word "love" will change per person using it toward you as well. AND this is just or the word "LOVE!"

Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now.

It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN.

Stand up, step forward, raise your hand - it's your turn, I will call on you.
