From Sobriety To Recovery: An Addiction Recovery Podcast

Ep #303: Recovery is about balancing the long-term goal of "I'll never use again" with the daily focus of "one day at a time." Focusing on what can be controlled today is crucial, as sobriety is a personal choice only you can make. Every day presents an opportunity to take responsibility for that choice, and that's where real change happens - today. But we want to have our eyes on the future and how our decisions and actions today will guide us in creating the life we desire for ourselves tomorrow.

Sobriety promises nothing. Well, maybe it promises less blackouts and knowing what you did last night before you went to sleep, but it does not outright promise you a better life. That is for you to create. We can achieve this through our daily actions toward our long-term desires and goals.

Thus, one day at a time, and I will never use it again, are not at odds with one another - they are working together, in unison, to aid in our achievements of long-term recovery and a much better experience of our lives.

Ep #300: Seven years of sobriety and 300 episodes later, I've learned some powerful lessons, and the first one is that it's all about progress, not perfection. We don't need to be perfect; it's the progression we seek, and to manifest progress, we must keep showing up.

Mindset is everything—how you think determines how you live. Shifting from a fixed to a growth mindset changed everything for me, and it can be for you, too.

Emotional resilience? It's your superpower. Life throws challenges, but learning to bounce back without turning to old habits is critical. And speaking of habits—self-talk can make or break you. How you talk to yourself either pushes you forward or pulls you back. Reprogram your mind to be your biggest cheerleader, not your harshest critic.

Connection is the opposite of addiction. We can't do this alone. Building meaningful relationships is a game-changer. And when setbacks happen—and they will—they're just setups for comebacks. Every stumble is a chance to grow stronger. Sobriety is only the beginning. The real work starts once the substances are gone—it's about building a bigger, more fulfilling, and always-evolving life.

Ep #298: Is sobriety a punishment? This question was asked of a member of my Wise Mind Empowerment and Recovery Tribe, which meets on Slack. When I read this, my mind swirled with so many topics, as I have been asked this question many times when I speak at addiction recovery centers.

What is the answer? Well, if there were a clearly defined explanation or solution to this thought process, we'd be robots and not the amazingly infinite human creatures we are. Ep #297: We're diving deep into what it takes to change your life and stay sober. First and foremost, you have to want to change. No one can make you do it but yourself. Most of the hard work happens when nobody's around to cheer you on. It's in those quiet moments that real progress is made.

Remember, you're moving forward even when it feels like you're going backward. Just because others seem to be zooming ahead doesn't mean you're not progressing. Imagine sitting in a car at a standstill while the car next to you moves forward—it feels like you're going backward, but you're not. 

Just being in the game is a reward in itself—and once you think you've won, the game has really just begun. Like Olympians who achieve what they thought was the pinnacle, there's always a new bar to raise.

Accept yourself, but change your behavior. You are worthy of the air you breathe, just like everyone else. Remember, your space begins at the end of your nose and ends as far as you can reach. No one else is responsible for your change. Your trauma is not your fault, but your healing is. Take responsibility for your actions, and don't be a drain on those around you—understand the difference between taking advantage and earning support.

Persistency and consistency separate those who achieve their dreams from those who regret not attaining them. I didn't set out to get to 297 when this all started. I didn't see much, if any, of my life back then being what it is today - but along the way, I set challenges for myself and then left it all on the proverbial field or in the metaphorical water, and I do not intend to let up any time soon!

Here is to moving ALL THE WAY UP, even when the storm clouds rumble while the sun shines.

#294: Whether you are new to sobriety or have some time under your belt, your attitude about the world around you and the life you create for yourself is a never-ending journey of self-discovery and evaluation. Circumstances, events, and actions pour at you like Niagra pouring off that cliff - the one constant we can know without a doubt is that everything we experience, and its good, bad, right, and wrong, is strongly influenced by our subjective perspectives. New to sobriety, and you might still find that hopelessness that engulfed you back then enflaming you today - but there is a way out. You make decisions and follow through on them. You know the world is going to test your resiliency and fortitude. That's a fact. What you choose to do when life comes calling is on your shoulders. That's the beauty and curse of personal responsibility - you are in control. The hope versus hopelessness is your choice, too.
