Your intentions are bullsh...well, not totally, but pretty much. Intentions can be extremely valuable in certain situations to provide context but intentions do not excuse behavior. Often times substance abusers or toxic people will ask that their intentions become the metric by which their behavior should be judged, but this is dangerous and damaging to partners and families. Empathetic and caring loved ones want to give the benefit of the doubt, often to their own detriment. While substance abusers may not mean to hurt the ones they love, they do in fact hurt the ones they love. We discuss weighing actions vs intentions and how to balance the two competing influences and when to consider each.
