The Clinician's Corner

#102: Transforming Pediatric Eczema and Mood Through Functional Nutrition

Listen Later

In this episode of the IRH Clinician's Corner, we're presenting a special case study discussion from our recent Clinical Success Showcase event in June. Host Kristin Whitaker is joined by Caitlin Fierro, who was a member of the audience 2 years ago when we did our first Clinical Success Showcase. Since then, she has gone through our program and now is rocking it so much in her practice she's actually TEACHING this material on the Showcase!

Caitlin shares an in-depth case study of a toddler struggling with eczema, mood swings, restless nights, and chronic digestive discomfort. She walks us through the nuanced process of functional testing, personalized protocols, and the important role of parental support in achieving transformational results. From uncovering the hidden links between gut health and skin conditions, to spotlighting the crucial nuances of working with children versus adults, this episode is packed with actionable insights and clinical pearls for practitioners and parents alike.

In this interview, we discuss:

  • How a root-cause functional medicine approach transformed a toddler's severe eczema, poor sleep, digestive issues, and mood in just 12 weeks.
  • Why functional testing can reveal hidden drivers of pediatric skin conditions that diet changes alone may miss.
  • The surprising connection between blood sugar regulation, children's behavior, sleep, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Why eczema, gut health, food sensitivities, and even environmental mold exposure should be considered together in complex pediatric cases.
  • Practical strategies for helping parents successfully implement nutrition and supplement protocols with young children.
  • How combining clinical history, symptoms, and functional lab testing leads to more personalized protocols and better client outcomes.

Speaker bio:

Caitlin Fierro is a certified Holistic Nutrition Consultant, Toxic Load Expert, Restorative Health Practitioner and a member of the National Association of Nutrition Professionals (NANP). Her passion is guiding families toward a healthier, non-toxic lifestyle.

Caitlin's personal health journey began in her early twenties after she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Despite adhering to a strict gluten-free diet and consulting with all the "best" doctors and specialists in NYC, her health issues continued. This frustrating period, filled with unanswered questions and unresolved symptoms, compelled her to venture away from conventional medical practices and broaden her search with holistic and natural care approaches.

Today, as a wife and mother, the well-being of her family is her top priority. She advocates for a 90/10 lifestyle, maintaining a non-toxic home environment as the foundation. This approach allows for flexibility, enabling her family— and hopefully yours— to enjoy life's pleasures, whether traveling, dining out, or celebrating, without compromise.
