238: Dr. Glenn Livingston: Never Binge Again!

Listen Later

Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. Glenn and his previous work, theories, and research have been featured in major periodicals, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, and on ABC, WGN, CBS radio, and UPN TV.

Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Glenn Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison.

Glenn is the author of the book Never Binge Again, with over 500,000 Amazon Kindle downloads in the last two years. His unique way of approaching food choices has helped countless individuals to develop a normal, healthy weight and a much more light-hearted relationship with food. He advocates eating whole foods but is not promoting a specific diet, rather he helps people understand and overcome what leads to overeating so that they choose to never binge again.

In today's conversation, Glenn shares his personal struggle with food, where it started and how he overcame it. We discuss why overeating, stress eating, and binge eating are so prevalent in our culture today, and why it is nearly impossible to love yourself thin. An eye-opening conversation about the human brain, this interview is a great resource for anyone interested in taking control of their mind.

Key Takeaways

  1. We perceive that food which is vibrant in color is nutrient-rich. The food companies use this to fake us out by making their package colorful.
  2. Certain foods impact our pleasure systems, causing us to keep coming back for more.
  3. Character trumps willpower.
  4. Create character rules around food that eliminate the need for (case by case) decision making.
  5. Decision-making wears down your willpower.
  6. Bingeing and dieting are similar in that they both keep you in the feast and famine state of emergency.
  7. It is possible to override our primitive survival drives with our better thinking.
  8. Instead to trying to lose weight, follow this one rule.
  9. Every time you take something away, ask yourself what you are going to add.
  10. We are correcting our survival drives that have been hijacked by industry.
