- Butter Becomes Scarce with Low-Carb High-Fat Diet Hype

- If you can become intolerant to carbs, can't it also happen with fat?

Hi guys,

Thank you for the wonderful resources you have made available with your podcasts and books. I have listened and read, with great enthusiasm, everything about keto for a few months. I watched Jeff Volek's YouTube lecture entitled "The Art and Science of Low Carb Living: Cardio-Metabolic Benefits and Beyond” and it struck me in the video that if a person can be intolerant to carbs and thus uses them inefficiently (as defined by fat storage rather than efficient fat-burning). Couldn’t the exact same thing happen with fat? It stands to reason that perhaps some people will NOT burn fat efficiently and it too will become stored? Or is that possible? Please advise.

All the Best,

Ann

1. Am I doing something wrong in my ketogenic diet if my heart rate is slower?

Hi there,

I’m trying the keto diet and have noticed my heart rate is super slow at just 60 beats per minute. I feel good and am calm, but since I'm not an elite athlete and simply go to the gym about 4 times a week, this seems odd. I’ve heard a really slow heart rate can indicate a metabolic disorder. Is this anything dangerous I should correct in my diet and lifestyle?

Thanks!

Katie

2. Should I avoid pork on my ketogenic diet to avoid high sulfur exposure?

Hey guys,

I really enjoy your podcast. But I do have one concern. My husband who grew up around a slaughter house does not want me to eat pork because it is a scavenger. He says that whatever the pigs eat becomes a part of them in four hours, including high levels of sulfur compounds which attach to the joints and connective tissue in the body. The result of this is that it causes your joints to get soft which is NOT a good thing. The idea of keto is great and I am working toward becoming keto-adapted. But I am not going to use pork which has seemingly helped so many people get there. I would love to hear your thoughts on this and if you know anyone else who may have the same concerns I do.

Sincerely,

Mary

3. Could the vegetable glycerin in vaping liquid negatively impact insulin and ketone levels?

Hi Jimmy and The Doc!

Long time listener, love your podcast and listen every week. I’ve been a nonsmoker for a year and a half and keto for almost three years. When I stopped smoking I took up vaping and it helped me quit no problem. However, I've noticed since I started vaping I almost immediately started feeling very lethargic with muscle weakness. I also started gaining weight and had visible fat develop around my hips and in my belly that wasn't there before. I have tried everything to figure this out and then I learned something startling about one of the main ingredients in the vaping juice—propylene glycol. It seems these things are directly impacting my ketone production in a negative way and I discovered in my research that they spray it on skinny cows to promote fat gain. Yikes! So I switched to vaping liquids with vegetable glycerin instead and wanted to know if it impacts insulin and ketone levels as well that could be leading to my weight gain. There are mixed comments about this online. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!

Gina

KETO TALK MAILBOX:

Hi Jimmy and Doc Muscles,

Your podcast has changed my life I was making so many mistakes just trying to eat low-carb and not ketogenic. Your discussions and answers to common questions has really helped me refine the art of eating this way. I'm surprised how often your answer is to eat more fat but it really seems that the most common problems are a result of inadequate fat consumption in the diet.

I'm a 36-year old male and have been in ketosis for almost 3 months. I’ve lost 31 pounds and use the Ketonix to test for ketosis. It always shows red, so I'm confident I'm in steady ketosis. During the past 3 months I have not cheated and don't even feel any cravings or temptation to cheat. I'm happy to eat low-carb, high-fat for the rest of my life. My food staples are tea with heavy cream sweetened w/Splenda for breakfast, salads with extra dressing, and burgers with no bun for my other meals. Also, I hate to admit it, but I drink a lot of Diet Coke.

My concern is I'm starting to feel my gout flaring up in my foot. My wife says it is because I drink too much diet soda. Could this be the cause or is something else going on? When I began eating low-carb, I don't think I could've stuck to it without diet soda. But now after 3 months I think I have enough momentum that I could give it up if I have to, although I do really enjoy drinking Diet Coke. What’s making this difficult is it doesn't seem to interfere with ketosis, so I'm really hoping this isn't the problem with my gout flareups.

Thanks,

Seth
