  • Embracing Your Thought Leader Identity: a Client Success Story with Nora Wagner

This episode is a very exciting Client Success Story, featuring my client, Dr. Nora Wagner who was a competitive weightlifter, got her Ph.D. in physical therapy, and is now an entrepreneur

In this episode, we talk about:

    • How Nora went from Olympic weightlifter to a doctor of physical therapy
    • Nora’s parents were told she had ADHD but dismissed it
    • Once diagnosed, she discovered she had been self-medicating by lifting weights
    • Overcoming the obstacles of a difficult childhood
    • Coming to terms with her ADHD and creating an ADHD-friendly life
    • Embracing her identity as a thought leader as a young professional
    • Being an alpha female and how that affects relationships with both men & women
    • Letting go of the past in order to evolve into her full potential

During our work together, Nora gained some really important insights about herself:

    • She realized that she did not have to downplay herself or make herself small in order to make others feel good and not intimidated.
    • She realized that when she was putting herself down for others, she felt exhausted and negative towards everyone around her, and that’s when she knows that she was putting her energy in the wrong direction.

And made some practical changes in her life that moved the needle:

As soon as she accepted herself and decided not to care about others opinions, she saw immediate positive changes in her life:

    • She got more clients and has more energy to devote to helping them.
    • Giving her attention to much more important things.
    • She started going to bed early, getting enough rest and working out in the morning.
    • She got back into reading and being creative, things she felt she didn’t have time for.
    • Creating a morning routine made her focus on herself and appreciate herself more which leads to a positive outlook.
    • Even her family, friends, and co-workers are picking up on it.
    • Now she owns her own practice and is beginning to plan to train other physical therapists, even creating her own advanced PT certification.

Thank you, Nora, for sharing your story!

  • Are You Intimidating?

This episode is a solo show, in which Diann shares her history of being told she is intimidating and what she made it mean. She now believes that if you're a female entrepreneur, whether you own a small business, a private practice, a brick and mortar retail store, a coaching empire, or a virtual consultancy, sooner or later, you will be told in one way, shape or form that you are intimidating.

The label might sound a little different and the feedback might be packaged as well-meaning advice, but whenever a woman goes her own way, instead of following conventional norms, feathers will be ruffled among the rest of the flock. It's a fact of life that most humans prefer to stick with the herd.

If you have ever been called intimidating, threatening, or told you are too intense, too passionate, too driven, or simply ‘too much’, and want to learn how you can avoid letting these labels hold you back, this episode is for you.

Our Pod Praise (podcast review) this week:

Be driven without driving yourself crazy!

“As a driven woman who sometimes takes a wrong turn, I appreciate Diann's ability to see through the fluff and distractions to get to the heart of the matter. Thanks, Diann”

  • Freedom from Overwhelm with Kate Moryoussef

Our Podcast Praise review this week comes from JulesM98:

“This podcast is NO BS!!! Having ADHD myself, I find myself searching for resources nonstop. Sometimes, I even get overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. I find myself continuing to come back to Diann’s podcasts because she keeps them short, informational, and NOT BORING! She gets the message across and right to the point for the ADHD overwhelmed brain. It always helps because she has been in mental health for a long time and she is an EXPERT at this, especially having ADHD herself, as she mentions. Thank you so much, keep the podcasts coming! You inspire me.”

Did you notice that our podcast reviewer mentions the word “overwhelmed” TWICE?   That’s because women with ADHD often feel overwhelmed, and this year has been much more overwhelming than usual.  So, I decided to invite my new friend, Kate Moryoussef, who is an EFT Coach,  host of the Ambitious Mum Podcast, and a fellow entrepreneur with ADHD.

Kate specializes in EFT / Emotional Freedom Technique. Also known as ‘tapping’,  EFT is a technique that facilitates healing and personal growth by combining cognitive reprogramming with stimulation of the same points on the energy meridians that are used in acupuncture and does so without the use of needles.

  • How to Set Boundaries and Say No More Effectively

Do you often find yourself trapped in a situation where some recurring requests or favors are thrown at you and you just find it difficult to decline? If there's one of the many things that most people find extremely tough to deal with, it might be learning how to say "no." Wanna know why? Because admit it or not, people always feel the need to be liked, and accepting those requests is just one way to get the validation that we seek.

But it’s not just about that. According to author and happiness researcher, Gretchen Rubin in her book I often refer to the Four Tendencies, obligers do what is expected of them most of the time, but they often let themselves down by not doing what they expect of themselves. I guess you could call this people-pleasing behavior, but it's really just the underlying tendency to leverage others' expectations of us to motivate us, to get things done.

These facts and more on the consequences of being an obliger and the strategies on how you can improve your mindset and learning how to say "no" especially to the favors that make you feel uncomfortable, will all be addressed in this latest episode.

This week’s Pod Praise is from Heather Frechette-Crowley, a seasoned marketing professional and entrepreneur who had this to say about The Driven Woman:

“Digestible, Actionable & Sassy! Love this podcast! Not only does it give me another way of looking at things (i.e., my life) but it's presented in a straightforward manner with a side of sass! Diann goes beyond acknowledging and provides real-life scenarios I can apply in my day-to-day.”

“Are you talking about me? I just listened to the episode on memory and forgetfulness, and it felt like you were talking about me! I have struggled with my memory and concentration for years. • Happiness is 50-50

When was the last time you remember being sincerely happy with what’s going on in your life? Most people have something they wanted to have or to be in their life, and also take what they do have for granted. Most of us are more focused on what we think of as unhappiness or misfortune than we are on luck and joy.

Happiness may be vague and considered immeasurable by scientists, but what if I told you that there’s a way how you can live a peaceful and happy life without the stressors that are bugging you? Yes, that’s completely true. But don’t expect everything to be on your side because in reality, fantasizing about things doesn’t actually make us any happier or satisfied if we finally managed to get our hands on them.

Ready to dig deep and open your mind about the things that we need to accept, change, and/or improve in order to view the positive side of life?

This week’s Pod Praise is from Anika, an online brand strategist and solopreneur success coach, who had this to say about The Driven Woman:

“I typically stream podcasts directly from my Echos in my home or from my home office - to my pleasure this morning while showering and washing my hair, I needed something a little more motivating but short so I said "Alexa, play the Driven Woman podcast" and the rest is history!! I love how short these episodes are, I don't feel like I have to commit a chunk of time of my day to get value. Very happy to find you, Diann.”

  • The Highly Sensitive Healer, a Client Success Story: Meet Jen

This episode is our first Client Success Story, featuring my client Jen DiNardi, OTD who has a doctorate in Occupational Therapy, and specializes in pediatrics.

In this episode, we talk about:

    • What is occupational therapy and what kinds of things she helps her patients with
    • Why she pursued such a demanding academic goal (hint, it has something to do with proving something to herself…)
    • How Jen always knew she was different but was only diagnosed with ADHD in the last year of her doctoral program.

During our work together, Jen gained some transformational insights about herself:

    • How pretending she wasn’t struggling lead to a lifetime of anxiety, perfectionism, imposter complex, fear, and hiding.
    • She is highly sensitive and ignored this for years, causing her to feel strained and drained
    • Jen was caught in the empathy trap and had trouble setting limits and boundaries at work, so she had no energy for a personal life

And made some practical changes in her life that moved the needle:

    • Habit stacking: Now she never forgets to take her meds
    • Morning Routine:  She eliminated decision fatigue by exercising in the morning
    • Energy Management: What working virtually taught her about self-acceptance

Thank you, Jen DiNardi, OTD for sharing your story!

  • Not Giving a Fuck

How do you feel and what do you do when someone you care about tells you that your plans and goals won’t work or points out what they least like about you? We have heard so many people telling us to not care about what others think, but is that even possible?

They say we should not care about what they think about us, our business, our marketing, our message, our price point. We also hear that we shouldn't pay attention to what our competitors do or listen to negative reviews.

Is it possible to absolutely not care about other people's opinions or what others are doing? I don’t think so. I don't think it's realistic to expect ourselves to have no amount of reactivity when our behavior triggers a reaction in someone that we perceive as judgment or criticism.

What should we do when we feel rejected or hurt by the opinion of others?

  • Sleep Your Way to Success with Special Guest Yishan Xu, PhD

Many entrepreneurs are not getting enough sleep.  This is partly due to the hustle culture of entrepreneurship and partly because they tend to bootstrap their business, even when they can afford to hire or outsource.  I work with female entrepreneurs who identify with ADHD traits, and I can say with full confidence that very few of them are getting the kind of sleep that they know they should (and wish they could.)

Since this is our first guest expert interview, I wanted it to be special and deliver value.  I connected with sleep psychologist Yishan Xu, Ph.D., a Stanford-trained expert in behavioral sleep psychology,  host of two podcasts, Deep Into Sleep and  Ask Yishan,  a Mandarin language podcast. Dr. Xu also hosts a YouTube channel.  And, if that wasn’t enough, she’s a successful entrepreneur with a group practice in California that has more than 10 clinicians.

In this interview, we will be talking about how sleep is essential for entrepreneurs, how to get quality sleep, and the do’s and dont’s of sleeping (among others).

Yishan and I will cover the following:

    • Why she became a behavioral sleep specialist and sleep problems she treats
    • Habits of adults with ADHD that contribute to sleep deficits
    • The statistics on sleep and mental clarity  (they're scary)
    • Why you should stop hitting the snooze button
    • The connection between sleep and weight
    • Caffeine and energy  (this one blew my mind!)
    • The science and culture of napping  -Yishan & Diann share their personal beliefs and napping habits

    Recommendations:

Yishan talked about and uses Phillips Hue smart lighting in her home:
