  • Update to podcast schedule
We're switching from two podcasts a week to one podcast, starting this week.  The podcast was my small response to the Coronavirus crisis.  With restrictions easing slightly we all have more time to do stuff, so there’s less need for quite so many of...

  • 23. Jonas Deichmann. Smashing ultra bikepacking records

The name Jonas Deichmann might not be too familiar to English speaking adventurers, but in three years he set three huge long-distance transcontinental unsupported cycling records.
    2017  14,000km Eurasia 64days (Portugal to Vladivostok)
    2018  23,112km Pan-American solo 97 days (cutting a month off previous record)
2019  18,000km North Cape, Norway, to Cape Town, South Africa 72 days (again, a month off previous record)

  • 22. Justine Curgenven. Kayaking the Aleutians with Sarah Outen

Justine Curgenven is a highly accomplished expedition sea kayaker.  She helped to keep safe Sarah Outen, the round-the-world adventurer, when the pair became the first people to kayak the Aleutian Islands, the chain which stretches from Alaska into the Pacific Ocean.

This interview is a companion piece to Podcast 21 with Sarah Outen.  However, it goes further and explores Justine's more recent adventures, now she has moved from Wales to Vancouver Island, Canada.

  • 21. Sarah Outen. Around the world by human power

Sarah Outen circumnavigated the northern hemisphere using only human power.  Well, almost.  She traveled by bike, rowing boat and kayak and this is the first of two podcasts about that journey.

The second podcast is an interview with Justine Curgenven, who was Sarah’s companion on a massive sea kayaking stretch of the journey along the chain of Aleutian Islands off Alaska.

The film of the journey is called 'Home' and is now available (at a reduced price) on Vimeo of Demand here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/sarahoutenhome

  • 20. Gordon Brown. Top sea kayak coach

He is probably the world’s best known sea kayaker, partly because of his award winning instructional films, but mainly because Gordon Brown is such a good coach.

Gordon is a friend but I haven’t seen him for ages because he has moved his family from the west coast of Scotland to the west coast of Canada.

In this podcast we’ll talk about his early days of canoeing, teaching in Nepal, and a fantastic trip to Greenland with the late Duncan Winning to trace the history of a sea kayak.  Plus we dive into Gordon's new book, Sea Kayak Safety and Rescue.

  • 19. Chris Townsend. Ultra distance hiking

In the world of ultra distance hiking Chris Townsend is outstanding.  20+ books to his credit, the gear editor of Great Outdoors magazine, and the first person to complete a round of the Munros and tops (not as said in introduction) in a continuous journey entirely on foot.

In this podcast, Chris shares advice for hikers tackling the 2021 TGO Challenge, a backpacking event across Scotland that has been cancelled for 2020 due to COVID19.

Mainly we talk about two amazing ultra-distance walks on the Arizona Trail and the Pacific Northwest Trail.

  • 18. Kevin Woods. Winter round of Scotland's Munros

Kevin Woods is only third person to have completed a winter round of Scotland's Munros, mountains over 300pft high.  That's 282 mountains in 97 days in the long, soaking wet, depths of a Scottish winter.

Living in his van, with only a few friends for support, Kevin had to support himself.  As if walking 1400 miles wasn't enough, he had to shop, cook, dry kit, plan routes and check weather himself, then drive to the ranges which looked most promising.

He only just finished as the Coronavirus lockdown came into force.

  • 16. Franco Ferrero. Sailing the world, slowly

Franco Ferrero and his partner Cath are sailing around the world, slowly.  In five and a half years they've only traveled half-way and have squeezed lots of adventure into the journey.

Franco is a former Head of Paddlesport at Plas y Brenin, the National Outdoor Centre in Wales, and author of the books White Water Safety and Rescue, and Sea Kayak Navigation.  He's the man behind Pesda Press which publishes great outdoor sports books (including mine) and which Franco has been running from his yacht Caramor.

They were back in the UK when COVID19 struck, which has mixed blessings as we'll hear.

  • 15. Sean Conway. First, farthest & fastest adventurer

The first person to cycle, run and swim Lands End to John o’Groats.  The world’s farthest triathlon, entirely self supported around the coast of Britain.  The fastest trans-Europe bike ride E-W.  Sean Conway took all three records and we cover each one in this one hour podcast, itself something of an ultra.
