When you watch spectacular adventures on TV it’s easy to forget about the teams of people who’re filming the adventurers. Very often those teams have been led by Richard Else.
A judge at Banff Mountain Film Festival, Richard talks about the people he’s worked with; the challenging environments he has worked in; the many and varied difficulties of making a great adventure film, including managing not to die. At a time when the tech need to shoot and edit a movie fits in a pocket, Richard shares thoughts on making great adventure films with the latest technology.
Richard's programmes are available at Mountain Media
The charity Richard mentions is The Little Sherpa Foundation

She is the fastest woman to cycle around the world. What’s more Jenny Graham did it entirely unsupported. She took the Guinness World Record rules and made them harder.
Here we talk about the preparation and rides leading up to the big one, including cycling Lands End to John O’Groats unsupported in just four days during the dark, depths of winter.

For those of us who love swimming in crystal clear water, beside white sand beaches, the Outer Hebrides is a dream destination. Colin Macleod swims there daily (albeit just short dips at the moment during the current restrictions, and the Coastguard is informed).
Colin shares stories about swimming and swim camping around the islands off the Outer Hebrides; about being part of the relay team that swam sixty miles from St Kilda; about being rescued from an attempt to swim from the Isle of Lewis to the mainland. Colin also tells what it was likely to successfully complete that epic swim, only the second person to achieve it, heading back home across The Minch.
He also has a few suggestions for those who want to dip their toes into wild swimming. Our chat was recorded a couple of weeks ago at the start of the COVID19 restrictions.

It’s hard to know which of Alastair Humphreys' many adventures to chat about. He has cycled the world, rowed the Atlantic, run Sahara marathons and much more. After those epics, he adapted his exploration to Micro Adventures and wrote the manual.
In this podcast Alastair talks about crossing the Empty Quarter Desert, busking his way through Spain, and the tricky business of being a professional adventurer. Nowadays that seems to require the additional skills of being a writer, film maker and podcaster. So why does Alastair give away so much content, including all his latest book The Doorstep Mile?

A UK Adventure of the Year, Will Copestake shares three great adventures in this podcast.
Will sea kayaked around Scotland then climbed all the mountain over 3000ft, traveling between them by bike. He became a sea kayak guide in Patagonia Chile, before organising his own expeditions. He also runs a sea kayak guiding business in Scotland.
Most recently, he just made it home to Scotland before Coronavirus closed everything down and Will speaks to us from self-isolation.

One rider, many different types of adventure. Lee Craigie has been an elite mountain bike racer who represented Great Britain in the World and European Championships, and Scotland at the Commonwealth games.
She started social enterprise type projects such as Cycle Therapy and more recently The Adventure Syndicate. She's the Active Nation Commissioner for Scotland
But her first love is as a wilderness trail rider tackling the Silk Road Race and setting a female record on the Highland Trail 550. Many different types of adventure, and Lee takes us through them all. She was self-isolating when we recorded this but is fine now.

An extra podcast because this can't wait. Specific advice for outdoors people who’re staying active during our partial lock-down comes from a cyclist who is also a medical expert and will soon be working with the Scottish Government.
Professor Chris Oliver is known as The Cycling Surgeon. What’s less well known is he kayaked for Great Britain, tackling gnarly expeditions in wild parts of the world. We talk about that and cycling across the United States of America from Los Angeles to Boston.
We start with the current state of the crisis as seen from inside the NHS in Scotland.
