Death row inmate Tony Carruthers was scheduled to die by lethal injection this morning in Tennessee. The execution was initially delayed as officials awaited the Supreme Court’s decision on an ACLU emergency filing asking for a stay of execution to test DNA from the case. Once SCOTUS denied the request, medical personnel spent an hour and a half looking for a suitable vein for a backup line and could not find one. Officials then called off the execution and as we recorded this episode, the Governor issued a reprieve for Carruthers for one year.

A Virginia judge shocked the courtroom, and the woman charged with 8 counts of felony child neglect, by dismissing all charges against former assistant principal, Dr. Ebony Parker. The prosecution rested its case after calling dozens of witnesses, including the first grade teacher who survived a bullet wound to the chest, maintaining that Parker failed to act appropriately after being warned that a 6-year-old student brought a loaded gun to school. After the defense asked for dismissal before beginning its case, the judge announced she was striking all counts against Parker, saying the court “is of the legal opinion that this is not a crime.”

It’s unclear what happens next, but acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said “he will either show up here by his own will or by another way.”

Parker is being criminally charged after a 6-year-old student shot his teacher, hours after Parker was warned the student might have a loaded gun. Court began with juror questions, which ultimately led to both the defense and prosecution asking for a mistrial! The judge denied both motions, and testimony finally got underway, and it was compelling.

In a first of its kind trial, a school administrator is being held criminally responsible for her inaction the day a 6-year-old student shot his teacher with a handgun he brought to school. Former assistant principal Dr. Ebony Parker is facing significant prison time if convicted of 8 counts of felony child abuse. Teacher Abby Zwerner, who survived being shot in the chest, was the first to testify, saying she notified Parker and other teachers that the boy seemed suspicious and violent several times on the day of the shooting.
