  • 114: Cops Getting Charged: Navigating Risk/Reward, Legal vs. Moral Obligation and Society's Expectations with Sgt. Chris Nielsen
Cops are getting charged.. arrested.. convicted.  No two situations are the same and this message as well as this episode's conversations are not offering opinions about the course, investigation, judicial processes or outcomes of any cases involving police officer criminal prosecution.  What this conversation IS doing, is bringing the fears, concerns, confusion, and discord within all officers into the light.

It is to put voice and vocabulary to these critical concerns.  And what better person to dive into these topics than returning guest, Sgt. Chris Nielsen, who not only has a trove of legitimate policing experience through ops, tactics, administrative oversight and leadership, but legal education and background, as he serves as a consultant to police litigation.

We talk about these jarring dynamics, which would have us doing not only mental gymnastics, but moral and ethical parkour.  In all seriousness, our aim and discussion points are geared to help officers think responsibly about how to best show up through mindset, training, and influencing culture.  Of course, these considerations also involve the other participants of the criminal justice and legal systems- from community leaders to politicians, and members of the public- which we discuss as well!
    --
Listen to our first recorded conversation in Ep. 49!
    --
Chris grew up in a fatherless home raised by a mother with significant mental health issues. Despite the odds, he put himself through college, graduate school, and law school.

Chris left his career as a trial attorney in 2011 and became a police officer. His police career has spanned assignments in patrol, SWAT, special operations, and administration. He is currently an administrative training sergeant.

Outside of policework, Chris is an independent consultant specializing in police practices, policies, and procedures. He and his wife, Jenn, have been married for 19 years. They have two wonderful kids. He unwinds by mountain biking, skydiving, CrossFit, coaching his son’s competitive motocross pursuits and being a girl dad. You can find him at @dude1point0 on IG.

  • 113: Stuntman to Firefighter to Voice for First Responders and Societal Health Needs, James Geering

You can’t be in the first responder wellness space and not know about James and his work on Behind the Shield (podcast and IG).  James has a way of sharing a positive message with a dose of real talk which is very much needed in our lives.

In our conversation we chat about his story and quickly get into all things health and exercise- from diet dogmas to societal health ills.  Unhealthy first responder shift dynamics and what we could/would/should do about them.  We discuss admin fails and union fails and personal, individual fails when it comes to fitness standards, overtime and workplace limitations, and mindset.

James Geering was born and raised in Bath, England. After being told he was colour blind as a schoolboy, his dreams of becoming a firefighter were shattered. For years he drifted through a spectrum of jobs from lifeguard to stuntman and everything in between. It wasn’t until he emigrated to the US that he challenged the fire service entrance medical, proving his vision was more than effective for the career.

James spent 14 years as a firefighter/paramedic working on both the West and East coasts of America. He began to see the impact of service on his brothers and sisters, losing countless first responders to a host of work related physical and mental health issues. The unending funerals sent him down a new path. In 2016, he started a free podcast called Behind the Shield, which brings the greatest minds in wellness to the first responders, military and civilians of the
    world.

The show has since been downloaded 6 Million times internationally. The 950+ guests range from war fighters to farmers, medics to psychologists and everything in between. In 2020, James wrote his first book combining stories from his own career with the wellness lessons he’d learned from his guests. One More Light: Life, Death and Humanity has received incredible reviews worldwide. His second book, “Kinder”, will be released in August.

James is a lifelong martial artist, strength and conditioning coach and Exercise Physiology Major. He is a husband, father and a grateful recipient of the unconditional love from his German Shepherd Ember.

  • 109: Culture, Commitment and Care w/ Lt. Sarah Shendy
I met (new LT!) Sarah Shendy at the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s 40 Under 40 Award ceremony Dallas back in 2022, where we were both recipients. It has been rewarding to be connected with other driven, engaged emerging police professionals.

Sarah has such a positive outlook and critical focus on doing the hard work, having the hard conversations, and driving forward perpetually.  She brings a balance of inspirational candor with real talk- both of which I appreciate wholly! In this conversation, we talk about Sarah’s evolution into criminal justice and experiences being a female Arab officer.

We cover community policing with empathy, leadership philosophy and her unwavering love for the profession.
    —
Sarah Shendy is currently a police lieutenant with over 16 years of law enforcement experience. She made history by being the first Arab American Muslim female police sergeant in the State of Ohio.

Shendy was a Law Enforcement Training Officer with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for four years. Shendy earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in criminal justice. Having a passion for mental health issues within our community, Shendy is a Mental Health First Aid instructor and previously co-chaired the Attorney General’s Task Force on Criminal Justice and Mental Health.

In June of 2020, Shendy was appointed to be the inaugural Director of the Office of Law Enforcement Recruitment, the first office of its kind in the country.

Shendy was published in Police1’s 22 on 2022: A Police Leadership Playbook. In July 2022, Shendy was the recipient of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) 40 Under 40 Award. Globally, she was the only Arab American female amongst the forty award recipients. In March of 2024, Shendy was announced as an award recipient for the Arab America 40 Under 40.

  • 106: No BS, Fixing Physical and Mental Stress, Erica Gaines, TacMobility

If you’re a first responder on social media, you NEED to be following Erica and TacMobility.  Not only will you see simple movements to fix and aid posture, mobility, chronic pain, but statements that buck the narratives that are keeping us down mentally, socially, emotionally.

Erica’s a straight shooter; she tells us how it is (and frankly that’s necessary at times if we are going to kill stigmas about seeking help and actually undoing years and decades of physical and mental damage this career can dole out).

We talk about how Erica with her yoga background came to start working and integrating with law enforcement culture.  We talk how mind and body are connected with stress and trauma, and give steps to start un****ing ourselves.

Erica covers a lot of the chronic, continual issues most of us will face at some point if not all of our careers, from the hindering gear to the Shiftwork and struggles with de-stressing mind AND body- and what we can do about it daily!

    —
Erica Gaines is a Law Enforcement culture and wellness expert having met over 100,000 officers since 2013.

She created the world’s largest anonymous data survey of police and cumulative stress and her training is nationally accredited through the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement. Erica is a certified yoga instructor specializing in yoga therapy to rehabilitate and prevent injuries.
