During ANZAC Day Welcome to Country ceremonies across Sydney, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne, a small group of people booed Indigenous Elders as they spoke. At Martin Place it was especially confronting: Uncle Ray, the Elder who delivered the Welcome to Country, is himself a veteran whose grandfather served in the Light Horse Brigade and whose brothers served in Vietnam. A man who served this country, booed at a dawn service. There were 11,000 people at Martin Place this year, more than double the year before, so the respect was overwhelming. But the boos cut through the silence in the worst possible way.
